PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Arnost Paskalev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Gregory (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paskalev comes to the cage accompanied by The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Joe Gregory was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Arnost Paskalev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Joe Gregory!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Hirohito Nitta and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gregory fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Paskalev manages to avoid it.
Gregory swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Paskalev drops down looking for a counter takedown but Gregory sprawls and moves away.
Gregory throws a body shot but no joy.
Paskalev attempts a counter takedown but Gregory avoids it well and moves away.
Gregory looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Paskalev displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Gregory.
Paskalev changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Paskalev leaves Gregory with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Arnost Paskalev has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Gregory.

Gregory slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Gregory fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

and Paskalev counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Gregory bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Paskalev's guard.

Paskalev is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Paskalev is on top in guard.

Gregory looking to hit a scissor sweep but Paskalev is one step ahead there.
Gregory is pulling down on Paskalev's head. It's preventing any offense from Paskalev, at least for the moment.

Gregory is looking for a triangle but Paskalev pushes his legs off easily.
Paskalev throws a big elbow that misses.
Gregory looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Paskalev pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gregory is keeping the position for now.
Paskalev wants to control from the top but Gregory keeps moving.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Gregory manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Paskalev manages to get himself to full guard.

Paskalev has his foot on Gregory's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gregory works his way back into a safe position though.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Gregory stands and throws Paskalev's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Gregory is looking to take a break and control but Paskalev is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Paskalev is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Paskalev tries to get to full guard but Gregory has control of the leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Arnost Paskalev will probably get the nod.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Gregory holds on and takes a little breather.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Paskalev is working hard here to advance position.
Gregory has momentary wrist control but Paskalev slips an elbow through the middle.

Gregory manages to get back to half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Paskalev connects with a nice short shot to Gregory's temple.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Gregory has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
You can see the frustration on Gregory's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Paskalev makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Paskalev is working Gregory over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Paskalev is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Gregory can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Joe Gregory has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Paskalev cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Paskalev fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Gregory is desperately trying to improve his position but Paskalev has a good base and remains in mount.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Paskalev lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.


Gregory is rocked!
Gregory tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Paskalev is landing with some decent strikes but Gregory is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Gregory is still in real trouble! Can Paskalev finish him?
Gregory swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.

And that's the end of the fight!
Arnost Paskalev showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Paskalev, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
