Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Paul Thatch! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Qfc Challenger! The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shirou Masuda and Yukihiro Shimada.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Challenger misses with a left hand and Thatch counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body. Thatch takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. A shot to the liver by Thatch. Beautiful body shot. Qfc Challenger seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Thatch thuds his right hand into Challenger's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Challenger gets a takedown into half guard. Challenger seems to be working for a kimura but Thatch defends the submission attempt. Challenger is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Thatch is just riding it out for now. Challenger eventually gives up the hold. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Challenger sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Thatch defending well though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Challenger keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Thatch is trying to maintain the position but Challenger is very close to passing his half guard. Challenger throwing shots but Thatch is blocking nicely. Thatch won't allow Challenger to pass to mount. Challenger thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Thatch keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Challenger controlling the action here. Challenger throwing shots but Thatch is blocking nicely. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Challenger passes the guard and advances to mount! Challenger throwing shots from mount but they're not landing. Challenger with shots to the head and body - Thatch looks very uncomfortable down there.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Challenger controlling the pace for now. Thatch knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Challenger on the ground. Challenger looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
It looks like Paul Thatch has been cut. Thatch on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Thatch tries to get out of the position. Thatch is breathing heavily. Challenger working away from the top, dropping strikes. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Challenger lands with some strikes. Challenger tries to control but Thatch wriggling away. Challenger scoring with strikes but Thatch is staying in there.
Thatch is rocked! Challenger cracks Thatch with a big head shot that has him covering up instantly! He's rolled onto his side and the referee has seen enough - this one is aaaaaaaaaaall over!
