Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Sebastiaan Rutten!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, John Li!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Tiny Johnson and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Li misses with a jab, cross combination.
Rutten uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Li.
Rutten looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Li with the counter takedown but Rutten avoids it easily.

Rutten feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Lis jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Rutten throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Rutten scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Rutten throws a body punch but Li moves out of range.
A big left from Rutten misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rutten scores with a jab to the head.
Rutten dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Li takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Rutten gets caught napping as Li dives in and scores a takedown. Rutten manages to retain guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rutten wants to stand and escape but Li is having none of it.
Li trying to control the position from guard on top but Rutten is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Li told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Li is looking to work some ground and pound but Rutten has wrist control.
Li looking to sit in guard and control but Rutten gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Li wants to sweep here but Rutten controlling him for the moment.
Rutten wants to get up but he can't break Li's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Li working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rutten doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rutten manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Rutten has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Li is proving hard to escape from.

Li looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rutten is one step ahead there.

Rutten stands up from Li's guard - Rutten perhaps looking for a knockout.
Rutten is looking to land body kicks.
Rutten explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Li throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
And Rutten counters with a quick kick to the body but Li blocks it.
Li lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Li shoots in and gets a takedown into Rutten's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Li is looking to work some ground and pound but Rutten has wrist control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Li cracks Rutten with a solid left hand.
Li throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Li has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Li makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Li drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Li jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Li won't allow Rutten to get back to his feet.
Li loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Li thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Li in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Rutten lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Li keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Li is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Rutten scores with a nice body kick.
Li looks winded!
Li steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Rutten. That one must have hurt.
A thudding body kick lands there by Rutten!
Rutten scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Rutten seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Li walks forward, straight into a front kick from Rutten.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sebastiaan Rutten dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Rutten bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Li's head backwards.
Rutten moves out of range of the strikes.
Li lands with an uppercut that bounces Rutten off the cage and back into range.
Rutten misses with a double jab.
Li feints the counter takedown.
Li stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Rutten.
Rutten takes a swing at Li's ribcage but misses.
Li on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Rutten scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rutten throws a shot from downtown. Li moves away and avoids it.
Li walks into a left hand.
Li on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
A left lands for Rutten.
Li has developed a nice purple lump on his ribcage, as a result of some heavy body kicks from Rutten.
Li is breathing heavily.

Rutten connects with a solid leg kick.
