Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
31 - 29 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Joshua Shouse ! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
17 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Daniel Bryan! The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, George Francis and Frank Dennis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bryan misses with a right hand and Shouse counters by moving into the clinch. Bryan tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Shouse 's elbow. Shouse breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Shouse lands a jab-cross combination. Bryan takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Shouse fails with a takedown attempt. Shouse closes the distance and clinches up with Bryan, looking for a takedown. Shouse pushes Bryan against the cage but Bryan circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Bryan darts in trying to clinch and Shouse counters with a one-two to the body. Shouse lands a nice looking kick to the body. Bryan takes a step back to recover. Bryan closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Shouse quickly recovers to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bryan is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Shouse flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Shouse trying to get back to full guard but Bryan takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount! Bryan sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Shouse defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Bryan. Bryan connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shouse is trying to stand up. Bryan working the ground and pound effectively.
Bryan controlling from the full mount. Bryan has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Bryan with the ground and pound from mount. Bryan tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Shouse tries to reverse the position but Bryan maintains control. Bryan is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Bryan controlling his opponent. Bryan prevents Shouse from getting the reversal. You get the feeling that Shouse really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Shouse might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Bryan looking to control but Shouse is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. The referee warns Shouse that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Shouse wants to control but Bryan is having none of it. Shouse is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Shouse is squirming around, avoiding Bryan's attempts to control the action. Bryan controlling his opponent. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Daniel Bryan dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Bryan throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Shouse was covering up waiting for the punch and Bryan finishes the takedown easily into guard. Bryan advances to half guard. Shouse works his way to full guard. Good work. Shouse looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Bryan working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Shouse 's head. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Bryan slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Bryan is looking to take a break and control but Shouse is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bryan working away. Bryan is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Shouse is trying to escape and Bryan transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Shouse is forced to tap! Nice work there by Bryan! Very nice indeed!
