Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Herschel Mathis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Michael Gilchrist! The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Fedor Mirinova and Valeri Chadov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gilchrist clinches up with Mathis and pushes him back against the cage. Mathis is trying to pull guard but Gilchrist has him pressed against the cage. Mathis trying to stall but Gilchrist improves his position.
Mathis breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gilchrist swats away the attempt to clinch by Mathis. Gilchrist closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gilchrist lands in his opponent's guard. Gilchrist wants to pass the guard but Mathis is keeping the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gilchrist is pushing down on Mathis's leg trying to pass to half guard. Mathis is fighting to maintain full guard but Gilchrist has managed to sneak the leg through. Mathis is trying to maintain the position but Gilchrist is very close to passing his half guard. Mathis trying to get back to full guard but Gilchrist takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
That's one minute gone in the round. Gilchrist controlling his opponent. Mathis tries to lock up and control but Gilchrist gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Gilchrist controlling from mount. Gilchrist with good strikes from the mount here! Mathis is wriggling around trying to escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gilchrist putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound! Gilchrist unloading with bombs!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mathis is trying to escape the mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gilchrist working the ground and pound effectively.
Mathis knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gilchrist on the ground. Mathis tries to hold on but Gilchrist postures up. Gilchrist looking to control and managing it successfully. Mathis is trying to escape the mount.
Gilchrist controlling the position easily from mount. Mathis is trying to reverse the position but instead Gilchrist has taken his back - oops!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mathis tries to roll but Gilchrist sticks to his back.
Mathis looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. Gilchrist is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Mathis with him. Mathis is trying to defend but Gilchrist has an arm under the chin now! Mathis grimaces and is forced to tap out!
