PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Andrew Stevenson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aron Bane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Andrew Stevenson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Aron Bane!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Valeri Chadov and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stevenson stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Stevenson wants it to stay on the feet.
Nice body punch from Bane.
Stevenson defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Bane.
Stevenson drops down looking for a counter takedown but Bane sprawls and moves away.

Bane gets a clinch.
Bane is trying to maintain a safe position but Stevenson gets an underhook and turns Bane into the cage.

Bane breaks the clinch.
Bane goes for a double leg but Stevenson avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Stevenson continues to drive forward.
Stevenson throwing a counter right hand but Bane manages to avoid it.

Bane moves into the clinch successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A frustrated look appears on Bane's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Bane fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Bane wants to break free but Stevenson has control.

Bane goes for a takedown in the clinch but Stevenson prevents it.

Bane wants to sweep here but Stevenson controlling him for the moment.
Stevenson stands up over Bane, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Stevenson postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Stevenson's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Stevenson throws a big right hand that misses.
Bane wants to control but Stevenson passes easily into half guard.
Stevenson throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Stevenson tries to stand but can't do so whilst Bane controls his leg.
Bane tries to get to full guard but Stevenson has control of the leg.
Bane is trying to maintain the position but Stevenson is very close to passing his half guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Bane scores with a jab to the jaw.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Bane is defended easily by Stevenson.

Bane misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Stevenson.
Stevenson was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Bane clinches.
Bane prevents Stevenson from breaking the clinch.
Stevenson leaning his opponent against the cage.
Stevenson has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Bane avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Bane tries to pull guard but Stevenson holds him up against the cage and eventually Bane drops back down to his feet.
Stevenson is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Stevenson changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Bane fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Bane throws a left and a right that both miss

and Stevenson counters with a shoot takedown. Bane fights it but they end up in guard.
Bane is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Bane is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Andrew Stevenson will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Bane fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

and Stevenson counters with a lovely shot to the body.
The fight stays on the outside here - Stevenson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Bane clinches up with Stevenson and pushes him back against the cage.
Bane prevents a takedown attempt there.
Bane jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Stevenson walks away with a smile on his face. Bane gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Bane shoots in for a takedown but Stevenson shows good takedown defense.
Andrew Stevenson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Aron Bane.
Stevenson uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Bane.
Bane shoots in looking for a takedown but Stevenson manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Bane's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Stevenson feinted with a counter takedown.
Bane is breathing heavily.

Stevenson closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Stevenson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Bane throws the kick towards the body but Stevenson avoids it.
Bane tries to score a power double leg takedown but Stevenson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Bane somewhat.

Bane throws a head kick but Stevenson moves out of range.
Aron Bane seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Stevenson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Stevenson gets a clinch.
A hook to the body from Stevenson.
Bane is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Bane is looking to take this one to the mat.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Stevenson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Stevenson gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Stevenson tries to score a body lock takedown but Bane shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Stevenson is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Bane gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Bane tries for a takedown. No joy.
Stevenson tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Bane smiles and moves away.
Bane defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Stevenson.
Bane is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.

Stevenson closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

The ground and pound from Stevenson seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Stevenson postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Stevenson throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Bane on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Stevenson in the domination position with Bane hanging on.
Stevenson misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Bane fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Stevenson avoids it really well and circles away.
Bane throws a predictable looking body shot
and Stevenson counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Bane doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Stevenson counters with a big head kick but Bane shrugs it off.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Bane moves into the clinch.
Bane tries to land a knee to the head but misses.

Bane breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Bane takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Bane throws a head kick but Stevenson moves out of range.

Bane fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Andrew Stevenson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Aron Bane.
Stevenson shoots in for a takedown but Bane shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Bane throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Bane keeps the fight on the outside.
Stevenson moves in looking to clinch but Bane pushes him off.
Bane tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Stevenson was well out of range. Poor timing from Bane.

Bane avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Stevenson shoots for a takedown but Bane saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Bane changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Stevenson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Stevenson dives in and scores a takedown into Bane's guard.
Stevenson is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Stevenson lands a couple of elbows.

Stevenson gets to his feet - Bane follows without any prompting.

Stevenson tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Bane defends well and Stevenson ends up having to push Bane into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Bane shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Stevenson counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Stevenson wants to clinch.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Stevenson wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Stevenson has had enough of the clinch but Bane keeps him there for the moment.

Bane is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Stevenson to keep the fight standing.
Bane is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Stevenson is keeping busy.

Andrew Stevenson showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Stevenson, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
