Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Brian Cardenas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Spenser Steel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Spenser Steel has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brian Cardenas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Spenser Steel!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, David Schapiro and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cardenas scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Steel makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Steel.
Cardenas's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Cardenas postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Cardenas stopping the sweep attempt from Steel.
Cardenas controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Steel looks winded!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cardenas trying to stand up but can't free himself from Steel's guard.
Cardenas seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Steel darts in looking for a takedown but Cardenas gets double underhooks and turns Steel into the cage.

Steel manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Cardenas on his heels. He'll look to pass Cardenas's guard now, I'm sure.

Cardenas has his foot on Steel's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Steel works his way back into a safe position though.

Cardenas is looking for a triangle but Steel pushes his legs off easily.

Steel avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Steel wants to stand and escape but instead Cardenas has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Cardenas gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Steel gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cardenas not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Cardenas won't allow Steel to sweep him here.

Steel not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Cardenas drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Cardenas will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Cardenas is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Steel's shoulder. That is not cool.

Cardenas has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
We've been informed that Steel has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.

Cardenas decides to stand up, so the ref orders Steel to his feet.

Steel gets caught flat footed, as Cardenas shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Cardenas's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Steel has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Cardenas can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Cardenas decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Cardenas is pushing down on Steel's leg trying to pass to half guard. Steel is fighting to maintain full guard but Cardenas has managed to sneak the leg through.
Still in half guard, Cardenas seems content to control.
Steel has hold of Cardenas's hands but Cardenas slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Cardenas connects with a nice short shot to Steel's temple.
Cardenas really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Cardenas seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Cardenas takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Cardenas closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Steel did well to prevent Cardenas getting side control.

Cardenas feints and as Steel raises his hands in defense, Cardenas changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Cardenas controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Steel looking for a sweep. Not yet Steel, not yet.
Cardenas stands up over Steel, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Cardenas working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Steel's head.
Cardenas seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Cardenas.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Cardenas shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Steel is trying to defend but Cardenas finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Steel has hold of Cardenas's hands but Cardenas slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Cardenas's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Cardenas seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Steel stalling in the clinch but Cardenas improves position.
Steel is pressed up against the cage. Cardenas has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Steel down to the mat. Steel avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Steel fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Cardenas scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Steel doesn't seem bothered though.

Spenser Steel has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
