PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Charlie Golden (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Spenser Steel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Charlie Golden has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Charlie Golden!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Spenser Steel!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, John Roberts and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Steel misses with a double jab
and Golden counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Steel looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Golden fails with an attempt to clinch.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Steel! But no joy.
Golden throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Golden scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Steel misses with a takedown attempt
and Golden counters with a left to the body.

Golden clinches up against the cage.

Golden pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Golden has managed to clinch.

Golden successfully pulls guard.
Golden is trying to keep Steel in close.

Golden has control of Steel's left arm, preventing Steel from doing any damage.
Steel trying to control the position from guard on top but Golden is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Golden is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Golden misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Golden connects with a high kick.
Steel shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Golden as he jumps to the side.
Golden throws a quick counter kick to the body but Steel avoids it.
Golden stuffs the takedown attempt from Steel. Steel gets slowly back to his feet.
Charlie Golden has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Spenser Steel.

Golden pushes Steel up against the cage in a clinch.
Golden pushes Steel back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Golden changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Steel fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Golden fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Golden moves into the clinch.
Steel is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Steel takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Golden pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Steel tries to circle away but Golden has him pinned against the cage.
Steel prevents a takedown attempt there.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Golden blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Golden is trying to drag Steel to the mat but Steel just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Golden pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Golden really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Golden gets control of Steel's arms and successfully pulls guard. Golden will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Golden had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Steel defends it easily.
Golden not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Golden pulls Steel in close to his closed guard and prevents Steel from doing any damage or advancing position.

We've been informed that Steel has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Golden fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Steel, pushing him back against the cage.
Golden has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Steel avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Golden drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Steel gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Golden drops down looking for an ankle pick but Steel pulls his leg out and moves away.
Nice uppercut lands for Golden. That snapped Steel's head back.

Steel shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Golden tries to clinch there but Steel circles away.

Golden bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Golden lands a slapping body shot.

Golden is trying to pull guard but Steel has him pressed against the cage.
Steel has developed a nice purple lump on his ribcage, as a result of some heavy body kicks from Golden.

Golden manages to break the clinch.
Golden scores with a kick to the midsection.
Spenser Steel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Steel tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Golden changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Steel crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Golden - the referee stops the clock and Steel gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Golden. Steel manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Charlie Golden is winning the standup battle so far.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Steel keeps the fight on the outside.

Golden shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Steel's guard.
Golden is looking to work some ground and pound but Steel has wrist control.
Golden knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Steel on the ground.
Golden scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Golden makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Golden thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Steel tries to stand but can't do so whilst Golden controls his leg.
Steel thows a huge punch but Golden dodges it nicely.
Golden is trying to maintain the position but Steel is very close to passing his half guard.
Golden is trying to get back to full guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Golden is looking to control Steel's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Golden avoid being mounted?

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Steel is trying hard to land a takedown here. Golden sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Golden fails with an attempt to clinch.
Steel tries to counter by closing the distance.

Golden has closed the distance and engaged Steel in a clinch.

Golden has Steel pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Golden pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Steel tumbling to the mat - Golden dives into Steel's guard.
Steel manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Golden manages to get himself to full guard.

Charlie Golden overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Golden is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Spenser Steel has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Charlie Golden is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Steel postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Golden is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Steel, into his guard.
