Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jarvis Mercado! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Dwight Powell! The judges for this bout are Topper Green, Ben Hemmingworth and Skip Squint.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Powell drives through and clinches with Mercado against the cage.
Mercado is looking to break free of the clinch but Powell has double underhooks. Mercado manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Both guys are working to get underhooks. Mercado is trying to stall.
Maybe Mercado would be better served going for some more strikes rather than trying to control so much. Mercado throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges. Powell putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Mercado in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body. Mercado is trying to push Powell away but Powell has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Mercado letting Powell take a breather here. Powell missing with knees to the body.
Mercado manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors. Powell scores with a knee to the head.
It looks like Jarvis Mercado has been cut. Powell works on Mercado's body with a couple of short punches. Powell wants to stall.
Powell landing knees to the head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Powell tries to work over Mercado's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target. Mercado's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not. Mercado is trying to stall.
Mercado escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Powell fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mercado, pushing him back against the cage. Powell dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage. Mercado is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Mercado is trying to break free. Powell landing some nice looking knees to the body.
Mercado takes an elbow to the forehead. Powell unloads a knee to the mid-section. Mercado is breathing heavily. Powell looking to throw knees to the head but Mercado is blocking nicely.
Mercado takes a knee right on the jaw!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Both fighters working to control the clinch. Powell lands a big knee to the head and Mercado goes down! Powell pounces and finishes the fight with strikes! He jumps to his feet and celebrates with the crowd!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:12 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Dwight Powell! Our winner, Dwight Powell, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
