PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Yrjo Jarvinen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Mir's choice of entrance music: Amazing- Kanye West. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 21 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Yrjo Jarvinen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Frank Mir!
The judges for this bout are Francis DeMontford, Skip Squint and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mir closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Jarvinen did well to prevent Mir getting side control.
Jarvinen avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Mir.

Mir is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Mir is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Jarvinen flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jarvinen is doing well to control the position and prevent Mir from advancing to side control.

Jarvinen looking for submissions off his back.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mir wants to lay and pray for a moment but Jarvinen keeps working.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mir not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Jarvinen is looking for a sweep. Mir is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Mir thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Jarvinen's head.
Jarvinen tries to roll over but Mir keeps him under control.
Mir is keen to just control but Jarvinen is a slippery customer.
Jarvinen wants to improve his position but Mir is controlling well.
Mir is looking to take a break and control but Jarvinen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Mir is looking for a kimura here.
Mir is stalling here. Jarvinen is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Mir seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Jarvinen has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Jarvinen wants to control but Mir is keeping him busy.
Mir told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.

Jarvinen has control of an arm but Mir manages to advance to Jarvinen's back!
Well, with Mir on his back, surely it's only a matter of time before Jarvinen is tapping out... Can he escape the position?
Mir is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

Jarvinen is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Jarvinen gets to his feet. Mir looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Jarvinen tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Mir manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Jarvinen misses with a series of wild punches.

Jarvinen avoids the head kick by Mir.
A quick step to the side and Jarvinen tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Mir circles away from the clinch attempt.
Mir with the counter takedown but Jarvinen avoids it easily.
The fight stays on the outside here - Jarvinen looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Jarvinen falls off balance throwing a combination

so Mir counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Jarvinen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Mir trying to control but Jarvinen is working from the bottom.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Jarvinen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mir gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Mir dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Mir fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Mir dives in and scores a takedown into Jarvinen's guard.

Mir thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Jarvinen is fighting to break Mir's control of his arms but Mir is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Mir controls Jarvinen momentarily but Jarvinen frees himself.

Jarvinen is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Mir is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Mir has escaped and now he's on top!

Jarvinen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Mir cracks Jarvinen with a solid left hand.
Jarvinen controls Mir momentarily but Mir frees himself.
Mir wants to control from the top but Jarvinen keeps moving.

Jarvinen is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Mir is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Mir tries to free his leg and advance position but Jarvinen is retaining full guard.
Mir won't allow Jarvinen to get back to his feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mir checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.

Jarvinen is looking to regain half guard here but Mir keeps moving and retains side control.

Mir cracks Jarvinen with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Check out the look on Mir's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Jarvinen tries to buck Mir off but Mir is having none of it.
Mir is looking to take a break and control but Jarvinen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The strikes coming from Mir are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Mir remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Jarvinen tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Mir wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Frank Mir showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Jarvinen looks to score with a jab to the body but Mir is just out of range.
Mir has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Mir looks to land a combination but Jarvinen avoids it well.
Mir avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Mir tries to move into range but Jarvinen moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.

Frank Mir is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Yrjo Jarvinen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mir accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Jarvinen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mir defends it easily.

Jarvinen is looking for a triangle but Mir pushes his legs off easily.
Jarvinen is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Frank Mir is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Mir seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

and Jarvinen counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

It looked like Jarvinen was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Jarvinen tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Mir counters with a three punch combo that has Jarvinen backing up. Jarvinen nods at Mir to acknowledge the strikes.

And that's the end of the fight!
Yrjo Jarvinen showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Mir has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
