14 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Matt Diaz! The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Marco Blurström and Roosa Järviläinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! De Payens rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Diaz moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Diaz shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and De Payens counters with a series of strikes. Diaz will be more careful next time no doubt. Matt Diaz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Diaz checks the leg kick nicely there.
Diaz misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. De Payens misses with a wild body shot. De Payens tries to bum rush Diaz with a series of wild strikes but Diaz uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Diaz avoids the body shot from De Payens.
De Payens misses with a double jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. De Payens fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Diaz on the side of the head. De Payens connects with a body shot. De Payens dips down and scores with a jab to the body. The fighters circling - Diaz throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
That's one minute gone in the round. De Payens gets caught napping as Diaz dives in and scores a takedown. De Payens manages to retain guard. De Payens is looking to stand up but Diaz isn't so interested in that idea. De Payens is trying to control the position but Diaz postures up. De Payens looking to hit a scissor sweep but Diaz is one step ahead there. Diaz wants to pass the guard but De Payens is keeping the position. Diaz wants to control from the top but De Payens keeps moving. De Payens keeping full guard, as Diaz tries to pass. De Payens trying to control the position here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. We've been told by De Payens's head coaches at Bad Pluto! (18 Elite Coach) that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. De Payens keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Diaz. Diaz moves out of range of the body kick from De Payens.
Diaz fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Hugues De Payens has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matt Diaz. De Payens throws a series of punches but Diaz avoids them all with ease.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from De Payens. Diaz works over De Payens's head and body with a nice combination. A big left from De Payens misses. Diaz is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here. De Payens closes the distance and clinches. De Payens swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Diaz tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Diaz tries to pull guard but De Payens forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Diaz lands a hook to the side of the head. De Payens lands a left hand that snaps the head of Diaz backwards. De Payens has a couple of punches blocked by Diaz.
De Payens tries to land a knee to the head but Diaz blocks with his arms.
De Payens breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. De Payens defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Diaz. Diaz's jab looks to have found its range, popping De Payens under the eye. This has been an exciting period of action! De Payens throws a left and a right that both miss
and Diaz counters with a nice double leg into guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. De Payens can't keep his opponent in guard - Diaz advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Diaz maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! De Payens could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Diaz has cracked it and De Payens is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Diaz!

After the fight, Matt Diaz was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly. In defeat, Hugues De Payens stepped up to the mic, saying 'Not only do you not understand my divine purpose, you judge me and cast stones. I will return, the time of judgement is upon your self, you are gods , wake up and realize you are the suffering you create, you are the love, we are one!'.
