2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mahdi Sandnema! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rashad Houston! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Gwen Towbar and Frank Dennis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Houston tries to clinch but Sandnema is having none of it. Sandnema fails to land the takedown. Sandnema shoots in for a takedown and gets it. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Sandnema trying to pass the guard but Houston defending well. Houston wants to control but Sandnema passes into side.
Houston is looking for a sweep. Houston wants to control but Sandnema postures up. Houston is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Sandnema off and has taken his back! Sandnema trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble. Sandnema tries to escape the position.
Sandnema wants to control his opponent's hands but Houston gets his hands free. Houston really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sandnema. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Sandnema takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. Sandnema is looking for a sweep. Houston thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Houston wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sandnema keeps working. Sandnema tries to bench press Houston off him but Houston keeps the position. Houston is working Sandnema over with some ground and pound from side control. The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Horrible takedown by Sandnema or perhaps it was just good defense by Houston which made him look bad. Sandnema throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Houston's waist but Houston gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sandnema off to one side. That's four minutes gone in the round. Houston fakes a jab and then connects with a hook. Houston looks to land a combination but Sandnema avoids it well. Houston misses with a wild combination.
Houston rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Sandnema moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Sandnema feints and as Houston raises his hands in defense, Sandnema changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Sandnema is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Houston wants to stand up but Sandnema is controlling him. Sandnema postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Houston is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Sandnema, into his guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rashad Houston dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Houston shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Houston was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Sandnema is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Houston swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Sandnema is now in Houston's guard. A big mistake from Houston there, giving up the dominant position! Sandnema passes Houston's left leg - he's now in half guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Houston can do anything to dispel that myth. Sandnema wants to pass the guard but Houston is defending well. Sandnema is working for a submission of some sort.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Houston tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Houston is looking to control Sandnema's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Houston avoid being mounted? Sandnema prevents Houston from improving his position. Sandnema is figuring out what he wants to do next. Houston tries to roll over but Sandnema keeps him under control. Sandnema is looking for a kimura but Houston is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Sandnema to get the leverage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Houston tries to clinch up but Sandnema circles away and keeps his distance. Sandnema changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Houston looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. What's Houston going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle. Sandnema swings around for an armbar but Houston sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Sandnema's guard. Houston advances position into side control! Sandnema tries to improve position but can't.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Houston lands an elbow. Sandnema being controlled for a moment. Houston gets to mount! Sandnema was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly. Houston lands a big shot there that rocks Sandnema but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Sandnema wants to control but Houston is having none of it. Houston with a couple of short strikes. Rashad Houston has got the better of the ground game so far. Houston takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Houston is landing with some decent strikes but Sandnema is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Sandnema is desperately trying to improve his position but Houston has a good base and remains in mount. Houston punishing his opponent with strikes. Houston unloading with bombs! Sandnema is looking to improve his position but Houston isn't that keen on the idea. Houston has control of Sandnema's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Sandnema regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Sandnema takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Houston shoots in looking for a takedown. Sandnema tries to sprawl out of it but Houston keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the ropes. Sandnema manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Sandnema has his takedown stuffed and Houston decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Sandnema's guard. Sandnema looking for a guillotine here but Houston defends easily.

Houston doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Houston manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Houston scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Sandnema is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Houston avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

A right-left combo lands from Houston. Sandnema closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Sandnema is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Sandnema moves into full mount! Houston won't be happy about that! Sandnema has hold of Houston's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Houston manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Houston manages to regain half guard. Good work. Sandnema is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Houston is just riding it out for now. Sandnema eventually gives up the hold. It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.

That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Sandnema moves into full mount! Houston won't be happy about that! Houston throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing. Sandnema tries to control but Houston wriggling away. Houston regains half guard. Houston slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Houston is trying to control the position but Sandnema postures up. Houston might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Sandnema kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sandnema preventing the sweep. Sandnema wants to control from the top but Houston keeps moving. Sandnema trying to move into half guard but instead Houston has managed to sweep! Sandnema looking to control.
Houston is working Sandnema over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Houston swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Sandnema counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Sandnema. Houston has picked Sandnema up - he's going for a ride! Houston dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard. Sandnema works his way to full guard. Good work. Houston is in close to Sandnema's body, working some short punches and elbows. Sandnema working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Houston doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Houston manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. That's four minutes gone in the round. Houston has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Sandnema to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Houston is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Sandnema pulls down on the head and he's put Houston to sleep! This one is all over!
