Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Jomlong Kiapoity! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Neil Drake! The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Richard Clark and Steven Brown.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kiapoity gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Drake. Kiapoity looks for a takedown but Drake sprawls well. Drake lands a nice shot that snaps Kiapoity's head back.
Drake listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Kiapoity fails to land the takedown. Drake has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Drake throws a hook to the side of Kiapoity's head but Kiapoity sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Kiapoity shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Drake sprawls well. Drake wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Kiapoity gets slowly back to his feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jomlong Kiapoity. That's going to take a lot out of him. Kiapoity looks for a takedown but Drake sprawls well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kiapoity shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Drake as he avoids it easily. Neil Drake seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Drake lands a really nice looking cross but Kiapoity seems unphased.
The crowd cheers as Drake lands an impressive looking overhand right. Kiapoity doesn't seem phased though. Kiapoity shoots in for a takedown but Drake shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Drake lands a jab to Kiapoity's midsection. This has been an exciting period of action! A momentary lapse in concentration from Drake enables Kiapoity to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Drake manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Drake has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kiapoity can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kiapoity tries to free his leg and advance position but Drake is retaining full guard. We've been hearing good reports from Kiapoity's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Drake looking for a sweep. Not yet Drake, not yet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kiapoity postures up in Drake's guard and throws a big left but Drake blocks it. Drake has his foot on Kiapoity's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kiapoity works his way back into a safe position though. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Drake is on top in guard.
Kiapoity has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Drake looking to pass the guard. Drake is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Drake wants to control from the top but Kiapoity keeps moving. Kiapoity had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Drake defends it easily. Drake postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Kiapoity is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Drake, into his guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kiapoity distracts Drake with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Kiapoity won't allow Drake to sweep him here. Kiapoity is posturing up here but Drake has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Kiapoity tries to roll out but it's too tight and Kiapoity has to tap! Slick submission there by Drake!
