The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mayes shoots in but no luck this time.
Mayes throws a right and a left that both miss.

Mayes tries to sprawl but St John drives through with a takedown into half guard.
St John is trying to control the action in half guard but Mayes is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
St John is thwarting Mayes's attempts to control the position.
St John lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Mayes is trying to control but can't.
St John looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
St John trying to control the action but Mayes is working from the bottom.

St John seems to be looking for submissions.
Mayes throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

St John wants to work for an arm triangle but Mayes is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

St John is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Mayes doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time St John.
St John has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Mayes is looking for a sweep. St John is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
St John is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
St John lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
St John prevents Mayes from improving his position.

Mayes trying to hold on to St John's head to control him but St John postures up.
St John working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Mayes wants to control but St John is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
St John looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Mayes with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
St John is sitting in half guard. He's postured up and lands a nice elbow. Oh, Mayes is hurt! He's hurt bad - St John fires away with more strikes and the referee jumps in to save Mayes from any more punishment! Congratulations to St John! Great finish!
