1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Lorenzo Fonseca! The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Seu Braga and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rodriguez misses with a combination
and Fonseca counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
It looks like Mario Rodriguez has been cut. Rodriguez stuffs the takedown. Rodriguez is looking to counter punch. Rodriguez connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Fonseca lands an overhand right. Fonseca gets caught napping as Rodriguez dives in and scores a takedown. Fonseca manages to retain guard. That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Fonseca is looking to sweep but instead, Rodriguez has passed into half guard.
Rodriguez stands up out of the half guard. Fonseca misses with a looping left. No luck for Fonseca with that takedown attempt. Rodriguez throws a big counter combination but Fonseca scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage. Mario Rodriguez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. Fonseca seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Rodriguez has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Fonseca is breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rodriguez controls the position from side control. Rodriguez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Fonseca is trying to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Rodriguez stands up and we're back to a striking position. Fonseca shoots in for a takedown but Rodriguez shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Lorenzo Fonseca seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Fonseca shoots in for a double leg but Rodriguez sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Rodriguez lands a right hook to the body.

Rodriguez seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Fonseca for as long as he can get away with.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Mario Rodriguez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Rodriguez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Rodriguez remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Rodriguez in side control lands a decent elbow. Fonseca wants to sweep here but Rodriguez controlling him for the moment. Fonseca takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Rodriguez lands a head shot. Rodriguez shoots in and bounces Fonseca off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Rodriguez with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Rodriguez is working Fonseca over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
