PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between James Owen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and George Palmer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Palmer has chosen Sans Pression - Numero 1 as his entrance music. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Owen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, George Palmer!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Chris Downing and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Owen is looking to clinch.
Owen really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Palmer throws a nice outside leg kick.
Owen tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Palmer counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Palmer passes Owen's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Owen looks like he's trying to stand up.

Owen is defending against the submission attempts here by Palmer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Palmer stops Owen from getting back to his feet.

Palmer is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Owen doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Palmer.

Owen is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Palmer pulls his head out easily.

Palmer is trying to work for a kimura but Owen is defending well.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Palmer darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Palmer is looking to take a break and control but Owen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Owen wants to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Owen is trying to escape back to his feet but Palmer uses the scramble to pass into side control.

Palmer is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Owen knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Palmer tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Owen is not content to let Palmer control the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Owen tries to clinch but Palmer moves out of range.
Owen will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Owen fails with an attempt to clinch.
Palmer swats away the attempt to clinch by Owen.
Palmer with the counter takedown but Owen avoids it easily.
Palmer has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Palmer dives in and scores a takedown into Owen's guard.
Palmer tries to free his leg and advance position but Owen is retaining full guard.
Palmer is standing up over Owen. Owen looks to escape but Palmer dives into side control.

Palmer is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Owen has escaped the position, nice work there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Owen sneaks out the side door and pushes Palmer away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Owen tries to clinch there but Palmer circles away.
Palmer throws a push kick but Owen slaps the foot to one side.
Palmer throws the left hand but Owen avoids the punch easily.
Palmer throws a body punch but Owen moves out of range.
Palmer buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Owen tries to clinch up but Palmer circles away and keeps his distance.
Palmer tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Owen tries to clinch but Palmer is having none of it.
Palmer circles away from the clinch attempt.
Palmer pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Owen moves out of range of the strikes.
Palmer throws an overhand right that lands on Owen's shoulder, as Owen tries to avoid the shot.
Owen moves in looking to clinch but Palmer pushes him off.

and Palmer counters with a single leg into guard. Owen didn't expect that.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Palmer trying to control the position from guard on top but Owen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Owen is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Owen tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Palmer has gone for a leg lock! Owen slips out almost immediately though and dives into Palmer's guard.

Owen throws a strike but Palmer rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Palmer drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Owen manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Palmer has Owen in his guard.

Owen postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Owen wants to stand and escape but instead Palmer has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Palmer is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
George Palmer has got the better of the ground game so far.
Palmer wants to control from the top but Owen keeps moving.
Palmer stops Owen from standing up.
Palmer looking to sit in guard and control but Owen gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Owen throwing strikes but missing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

George Palmer showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


A telegraphed right hand from Palmer misses the target.
Owen wants to clinch up but Palmer keeps it at a distance.
Owen takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Owen misses with the combination.
Owen tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Palmer throws a head kick but Owen moves out of range.
Owen tries to clinch but Palmer is having none of it.
Owen lands with a kick to the temple. Palmer shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Palmer wants to slow Owen down by chopping away at his legs.
Palmer dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Owen tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
James Owen is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Owen tries to clinch there but Palmer circles away.
Palmer fails with the takedown.
Owen tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Palmer counters with a nice double leg into side control. Owen won't be happy with that.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Palmer swings around for an armbar but Owen sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Palmer's guard.

Palmer pulls Owen in close to his closed guard and prevents Owen from doing any damage or advancing position.
Owen is looking to stand up but Palmer won't let him.
Owen is fighting to break Palmer's control of his arms but Palmer is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Owen wants to get up but he can't break Palmer's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Owen looking to sit in guard and control but Palmer gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Owen striking off his back, scoring a few points.
Palmer trying to control but Owen is working from the bottom.
Owen is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Owen has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Palmer has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
I was talking to Owen's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Owen tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Palmer's elbow.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Owen.
Owen tries to throw a body punch but Palmer avoids it by throwing Owen back against the cage.
Owen wants to stall.
Palmer is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Owen tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Palmer drops down looking for an ankle pick but Owen pulls his leg out and moves away.
James Owen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of George Palmer.
Palmer throws a body punch but Owen moves out of range.
Owen changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

Owen gets a clinch.
Owen missing with knees to the body.
Palmer blocks the elbow strike.
Palmer can't get the takedown.

Palmer gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
James Owen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Palmer prevents Owen from standing back up.

Palmer is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Owen defends it well.
Owen is trying to stand back up but Palmer is controlling him

Palmer is working for a kimura here but Owen manages to reverse the position and he's now in Palmer's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Palmer wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Owen is now in half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to George Palmer.
I've got Palmer winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
