PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kev Rubio (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Hopkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rubio comes to the cage accompanied by turn down for what. Kev Rubio is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kev Rubio!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Daniel Hopkins!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Ben Zyskovitsi and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rubio is looking to clinch.
Hopkins shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Rubio defends it nicely.
Rubio displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Hopkins.
Rubio tries to close the distance and clinch up but Hopkins swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Rubio feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Hopkins tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rubio working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Rubio decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Hopkins, up you get!
Hopkins throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.

Hopkins tries to bum rush Rubio with a series of wild strikes but Rubio uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Hopkins gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Rubio to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Rubio prevents Hopkins from getting back to his feet.
Rubio cracks Hopkins with a solid left hand.
Rubio with a nice head shot there.
Hopkins really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Rubio. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Rubio drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Rubio jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Rubio stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Hopkins shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rubio but Rubio pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Kev Rubio has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Hopkins.

Rubio gets the takedown into side control.

Hopkins is looking to reverse the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hopkins takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Rubio staying calm.

Rubio creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.

Hopkins wants to control but Rubio postures up.
Rubio in side control, just content to control the action for now.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Rubio looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Rubio remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Hopkins can't do much from the bottom here.
Hopkins tries to strike from the bottom but misses.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Rubio is trying to get an arm triangle but Hopkins is defending well.
Rubio remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hopkins swats away the attempt to clinch by Rubio.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Hopkins.

Rubio shoots in and gets a takedown into Hopkins's guard.
Hopkins is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Rubio is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Kev Rubio seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Rubio closes the distance and pushes Hopkins back into the cage.
Hopkins is trying to maintain a safe position but Rubio gets an underhook and turns Hopkins into the cage.

Rubio jumps guard and drags Hopkins to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Hopkins must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Rubio is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Rubio tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Hopkins smiles and moves away.
Sloppy strikes from Rubio. Those never looked like landing.
Rubio fails with an attempt to clinch.
Hopkins circles away from the clinch attempt.
Hopkins wants to counter the offense by Rubio and move into the clinch position.
Rubio throws a sloppy head kick and Hopkins moves out of range easily.
Hopkins tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Rubio was well out of range. Poor timing from Hopkins.

Rubio shoots in and bounces Hopkins off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Rubio decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Hopkins, up you get!

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hopkins tries to clinch but Rubio is having none of it.
Hopkins lands a glancing blow to the side of Rubio's head.

Hopkins gets caught napping as Rubio dives in and scores a takedown. Hopkins manages to retain guard.

Hopkins working for a triangle but Rubio defends it easily.

Rubio got a little sloppy there for a moment and Hopkins has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Rubio has managed to get both his arms back between Hopkins's legs - danger averted.

Rubio seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Rubio has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Rubio.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Hopkins is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Rubio clinches up with Hopkins and pushes him back against the cage.

Rubio manages to pull guard.
Hopkins looking to sit in guard and control but Rubio gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Rubio not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Kev Rubio overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hopkins wants to stand and escape but Rubio is having none of it.
Hopkins wants to sweep here but Rubio controlling him for the moment.

Hopkins had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rubio defends it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kev Rubio dominated that second round.
That's time! Rubio's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Hopkins is looking to clinch.
Rubio on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

Rubio closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Hopkins to the mat! Hopkins manages to get full guard.
Rubio postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Rubio's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Rubio drops back looking for a leg! Hopkins is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hopkins manages to kick Rubio off! Rubio jumps back into Hopkins's guard.

Rubio decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Rubio stands and steps away. Hopkins gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hopkins misses with the combination.
Hopkins throws a nice outside leg kick.

Rubio moves into the clinch.
Rubio stops a takedown attempt from Hopkins.
Hopkins tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Rubio smiles and moves away.
Rubio throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Rubio is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hopkins can do to turn this around?
Rubio prevents Hopkins from getting back to his feet.
Rubio lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Rubio seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Hopkins looking for a guillotine here but Rubio defends easily.
Hopkins takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Hopkins can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rubio controls the pace.

Hopkins working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rubio doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rubio manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Rubio with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Rubio is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Rubio tries to clinch but Hopkins moves out of range.
Hopkins doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Rubio is trying to break the clinch but Hopkins has him pressed against the cage.

Rubio pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Daniel Hopkins has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kev Rubio is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Hopkins gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kev Rubio showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Rubio, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Kev Rubio decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
