1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mohamed Abdul! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Daniel Cesar and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Abdul bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. George is not content to let Abdul control the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. George is looking to regain half guard here but Abdul keeps moving and retains side control. Abdul tries to move into full mount but can't pass George's legs. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Abdul tries to score with some ground and pound. George controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Abdul tries for a kimura but George is defending well. We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Abdul has eaten all the pies! Abdul wants to control but George is keeping him busy. George on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if George tries to get out of the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. The strikes coming from Abdul are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

No, George has escaped the position, nice work there. Abdul is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but George is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Abdul throwing strikes but missing, from side control. Abdul wants to control but George is keeping him busy. Abdul has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. George is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Abdul's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. George is refusing to be controlled, as Abdul sits in half guard.

Abdul perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. George slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. George is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. George is pulling down on Abdul's head. It's preventing any offense from Abdul, at least for the moment. Abdul tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but George defends well and Abdul ends up having to push George into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Abdul has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as George is landing a low percentage of strikes. George slaps away a takedown attempt from Abdul, before circling back to the center of the mat. George throws a right hand that Abdul ducks under and follows up with a left that Abdul also avoids with ease. Despite the aggression on Abdul's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter. Mohamed Abdul seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Abdul tries to clinch but George is having none of it. George will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Abdul shoots for a takedown but George saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Abdul dodges the punch combination from George.

George rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Abdul moves out of range and avoids them all easily. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. George throws a wild combination but nothing lands. George tries to bum rush Abdul with a series of wild strikes but Abdul uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Abdul tries to clinch up. Abdul shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. George defends it nicely. George is looking for a counter combo. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Abdul is defended easily by George. Abdul closes this distance looking for a takedown but George circles away. George throws a right and a left that Abdul avoids nicely. Abdul with the counter takedown but George avoids it easily. Abdul shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Abdul has George up against the cage in a clinch.

George has his foot on Abdul's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Abdul works his way back into a safe position though. Abdul slips nicely into half guard. Abdul is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. George is doing well to control the position and prevent Abdul from advancing to side control. Abdul is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, George has managed to free his arm - good work. Mohamed Abdul has got the better of the ground game so far. George trying to control but Abdul postures up.

Abdul tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. George manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. George misses with a wild combination.
