Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tanishk Soni (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Cook (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
29 - 30 - 2, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tanishk Soni! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Cook! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cook walks into a left hand. Cook tries to close the distance and clinch but Soni swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Soni darts in and clinches Cook up against the cage. Soni lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
It looks like John Cook has been cut. Soni presses Cook against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot. Soni has clasped his hands together around Cook's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done. Cook is trying to get back to half guard. Soni tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Cook is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Soni perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Soni wants to stand but Cook has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now. Cook missing with punches from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cook preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Soni prevents Cook from improving his position.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Soni moves into the clinch. Soni's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Cook shoots in for a takedown but Soni shows good takedown defense. Soni swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect. Soni moves into the clinch. Soni pulls guard effortlessly.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Soni throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Cook slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Cook wants to control from the top but Soni keeps moving. Cook throws a big elbow that misses. Cook stopping the sweep attempt from Soni.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cook wants to control from the top but Soni keeps moving. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Cook might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Soni haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Soni fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Soni closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Soni breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Soni clinches. Cook tries to land a knee to the head but Soni blocks with his arms.
Cook is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Soni is defending well for now. Cook can't break the clinch.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Soni breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Soni fails to land with a series of punches.
Soni shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Cook napping and manages to drive through into side control! Cook manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Soni slows the pace down in half guard. Cook trying to hold on to Soni's head to control him but Soni postures up.
Soni is looking to advance position but Cook won't allow it. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Well, if Soni is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Tanishk Soni dominated that round. The cut man is working on John Cook's cut. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Cook shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Soni defends it nicely. Soni drives through with a takedown into guard. Cook trying to keep a closed guard but Soni is proving a slippery customer.
Soni stopping the sweep attempt from Cook. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Cook is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Cook working for a triangle but Soni defends it easily.
Cook working a defensive guard but Soni passes into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cook is looking to get back to full guard here but Soni has managed to pass to side control instead. Soni stands up. Soni rushes Cook and presses him up against the cage. Cook has Soni pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Soni manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Cook is looking for a takedown. Tanishk Soni has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Cook. Soni scores with an uppercut up the middle. Soni is pressed up against the cage. Cook has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Soni down to the mat. Soni avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cook with a poor takedown and Soni counters with a huge left! Cook is in big trouble! He's backing up but Soni isn't giving him chance to recover. Under a barage of punches the ref has to step in to save Cook from any more damage. A dominating finish by Soni!
