PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Pierre Hudson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Li (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chris Li will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Pierre Hudson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chris Li!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Colin Fray and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Li throws a leg kick but Hudson moved away.
Hudson attempts a counter takedown but Li avoids it well and moves away.

Li moves into the clinch successfully.

Li breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Hudson wants to clinch up but Li keeps it at a distance.
Hudson shoots for a double leg takedown but Li sprawls well. He's pushed Hudson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Li.
Hudson is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Li stands up.
Hudson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Li tries to land a front kick but Hudson steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Li clinches up against the cage.

Hudson has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Li uses from the top position.
Li engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Hudson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Li doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Li manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Li wants to get up but he can't break Hudson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Hudson is looking to sweep but instead, Li has passed into half guard.

Li is looking to take a break and control but Hudson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Well, if Li is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Hudson has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Li escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Li!
Hudson is trying to improve his position.
Hudson gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Li is stalling here. Hudson is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Li seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Hudson has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Hudson has control of an arm but Li manages to advance to Hudson's back!
Li misses with an elbow to the head.
Hudson manages to reverse the position and now he's in Li's guard. Nice work there by Hudson.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hudson's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Li looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Li wants to stand and escape but Hudson is having none of it.

Li looking for a guillotine here but Hudson defends easily.
Hudson postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hudson scoring with punches to the head and body.
Hudson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hudson stands up over Li, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Li not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chris Li dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Hudson shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Li defends it nicely.

Li drives through with a takedown into Hudson's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Li stands up and waves to Hudson to follow him.

Li gets a clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hudson just leaning against Li, taking a breather.
Hudson misses with a body punch.

Li gets control of Hudson's arms and successfully pulls guard. Li will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Li looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Hudson would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Hudson in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Li throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Hudson escapes and throws Li's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Li tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Hudson easily slips into full mount!

Hudson looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
The referee warns Li that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Li is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Hudson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Hudson has control of Li's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Li regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Pierre Hudson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Hudson cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Hudson lands a big shot there that rocks Li but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Hudson avoids the attempt from Li to control.
Li takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Li srikes from the bottom but he's lost position and has given up his back.

Li is having to fend off submission attempts from Hudson, who is looking to sink in the choke. Hudson doesn't have the hooks in though and Li manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hudson is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Li presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Hudson looking to stall.
Hudson wants to take the fight to the mat but Li manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Hudson is trying to maintain a safe position but Li gets an underhook and turns Hudson into the cage.
Li is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Nice body punch from Hudson - that landed with a thud.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Li has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Hudson is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Li.
The ground and pound from Hudson seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Li shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Li was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Hudson sneaks out the side door and pushes Li away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Hudson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Li was covering up waiting for the punch and Hudson finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Hudson working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Li controls Hudson momentarily but Hudson frees himself.
Li has a closed guard, preventing Hudson from standing up.
Hudson trying to control the position from guard on top but Li is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Hudson won't allow Li to sweep him here.

Li is looking for a triangle but Hudson pushes his legs off easily.

Hudson drops back looking for a leg! Li is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Li manages to kick Hudson off! Hudson jumps back into Li's guard.
Hudson is looking to stand up but Li won't let him.
Hudson is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Li wants to sweep here but Hudson controlling him for the moment.
Li is trying to keep Hudson in close.
Hudson with a nice head shot there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hudson has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Li is proving hard to escape from.
Hudson distracts Li with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Li throws his legs up looking for a submission but Hudson uses it to pass to side control.
Li is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Li tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Hudson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Li takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
A lull in the action here as Hudson stalls from top position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hudson is looking to clinch.
Li stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Li wants it to stay on the feet.
Li looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Hudson seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.

Li fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Hudson, pushing him back against the cage.

Li gets a trip takedown into half guard.

Hudson looking for submissions off his back.
Hudson moves into full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hudson is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Li presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Hudson's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Hudson drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Li gets the underhooks and prevents it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Pierre Hudson.
I think Hudson has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
