Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 13 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Jeremy Pettis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
31 - 18 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Alexander Smirnov! The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Jeff Smith and Ryoma Takatsuka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pettis uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Smirnov. Pettis throws a hook but Smirnov avoids it easily. Smirnov throws a shot to the body.
Smirnov scores with a punch to the head. Smirnov moves out of range as Pettis strikes. Pettis with a jab. Smirnov lands with a thumping leg kick.
Good leg kick by Smirnov there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Smirnov has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Nice straight punches there by Pettis. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Pettis. Smirnov pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way. Smirnov throws a low kick but Pettis avoids it. Pettis throws a jab but it's blocked by Smirnov. Smirnov misses with a looping left. Smirnov getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pettis walks into a stiff left hand from Smirnov. Pettis avoids the body shot from Smirnov.
Pettis lands a jab to the head.
Smirnov waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Pettis. Pettis throws a jab when Smirnov was well out of range. A jab from Pettis finds it's way through Smirnov's defenses. Pettis waves his right hand out in front of him, looking to distract Smirnov. Oh, he's unloaded a beast of a left hand - it worked! He's dropped Smirnov to the canvas! Can he finish him!?
Smirnov is rocked! This has been an exciting period of action! Pettis gets to his feet - Smirnov follows without any prompting. Smirnov is still on wobbly legs! Can Pettis finish him? Smirnov throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Smirnov throws a hook but Pettis avoids it easily. Pettis lunges in with a left hook that violently twists Smirnov head around and knocks him out cold! Pettis hops onto the cage and yells out at the top of his lungs - Yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaah! They're showing the replay on the big screens now; that was nasty! I hope one of the photographers got a good shot of it.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:48 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Jeremy Pettis! A very excited looking Jeremy Pettis rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
