PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Maynard Maddox (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Coffey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). James Coffey will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 1, fighting out of New York, Maynard Maddox!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Coffey!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Steve Montenegro and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maddox on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Coffey. Coffey obviously looking to wear him down.

Coffey has managed to clinch.
Coffey jumps guard but Maddox stands there with Coffey around his waist. Coffey gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Come on Coffey - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Maddox has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Coffey after a bit of a struggle.
Coffey managing to block the knees to the body from Maddox.
Maddox avoiding damage as Coffey throws knees to the body.
Coffey pushes Maddox back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maddox breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Coffey shoots in and drives through. Maddox sprawls well.
As Coffey looks to move away, Maddox throws a big counter combo bu Coffey just gets out of the way.

Maddox avoids the head kick by Coffey.
Maddox takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Maddox shoots in for a double leg but Coffey sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Coffey is trying hard to land a takedown here. Maddox sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Coffey is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Maddox gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Coffey has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Maddox avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Maddox wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Coffey drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Maddox gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Coffey tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Maddox lands with a short punch from the clinch.

Coffey's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Coffey closes the distance and pushes Maddox back into the cage.
Maddox has had enough of the clinch but Coffey keeps him there for the moment.
Coffey fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Maddox lands a takedown into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Maddox is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Maddox is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Coffey looking to control but Maddox passes into half guard.

Maddox looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Coffey gets full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Coffey controls Maddox momentarily but Maddox frees himself.
Maddox is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Maddox scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Maddox with a nice head shot there.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Coffey throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Maddox connects with a couple of short punches.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Maynard Maddox will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Coffey throws a left and a right that both miss

and Maddox moves into the clinch.

Maddox decides to pull guard.
Maddox wants to get back to his feet but Coffey is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Maddox looking to hit a scissor sweep but Coffey is one step ahead there.
Coffey prevents Maddox from getting back to his feet.
Coffey trying to control but Maddox is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Maddox wants to stand but Coffey is controlling the position.
Maddox is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Maddox is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Coffey can do to turn this around?
Maddox is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Maddox doesn't manage to clinch there - Coffey circles away.
Coffey shoots in but no luck this time.

Maddox tries to keep at a distance but Coffey has taken the fight into the clinch.
Coffey tries to land knees in the clinch but Maddox avoids the damage to the body.
Maddox is looking to take this one to the mat.
Maddox is looking to break free of the clinch but Coffey has double underhooks.
Maddox tries to break free but Coffey pushes him back against the cage.

Coffey stops a takedown attempt from Maddox.
Coffey has Maddox pressed against the cage, preventing Maddox from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Maddox throws a punch but it's blocked by Coffey.
Maddox really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Coffey tries to pull guard but Maddox forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Coffey tries a knee to the head but Maddox blocks it.
Maddox wants to take the fight to the mat but Coffey manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Maynard Maddox. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Coffey drops down looking for an ankle pick but Maddox pulls his leg out and moves away.

Maddox wants to lay and pray for a moment but Coffey keeps working.
Coffey manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Maddox is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Coffey has managed to free his arm - good work.
Coffey is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Maddox looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Maddox is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Maddox not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Coffey wants to get back to his feet.
Maddox tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Coffey.
Maddox has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Maddox is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Coffey doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Maddox.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Coffey moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Maynard Maddox dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


A right-left combo lands from Coffey.
Nice takedown defense from Coffey. No joy for Maddox on that attempt.
Despite the aggression on Coffey's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Maddox is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Coffey.
A looping hook to the body misses from Coffey. Maddox does a little dance to reset his feet.

Coffey shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Maddox as he avoids it easily.

Coffey has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Maddox avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Maddox has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Maddox turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Coffey is trying to improve his position.
Coffey takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Maddox scores with a couple of short elbows.
Coffey is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Maddox asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Maddox is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Coffey knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Maddox creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.

Maddox stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Coffey shoots for a takedown but Maddox saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Maddox shoots in but no luck this time.
Coffey closes the distance and clinches up with Maddox, looking for a takedown. Coffey pushes Maddox against the cage but Maddox circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Maddox stands up and waves to Coffey to follow him.

Coffey shoots in for a double leg but Maddox sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Maddox wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

Maddox moves into range and clinches up with Coffey.

Maddox pulls guard successfully.
Maddox is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Maddox wants to stand and escape but Coffey is having none of it.
Coffey trying to control the position from guard on top but Maddox is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Maddox pushes Coffey off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
James Coffey has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Maynard Maddox is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Maddox lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Coffey has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Coffey and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Coffey changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
Maynard Maddox showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Maddox, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
