PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Bryan Bishop (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dan Dority (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Dan Dority will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 35 - 32 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bryan Bishop!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 6 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dan Dority!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Alexandre Firmino and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bishop avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Dority lands a really nice looking cross but Bishop seems unphased.
Dority connects with a nice looking jab.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Dority, as that shot connected.
Dority misses with a hook

and Bishop counters with a nice double leg into side control. Dority won't be happy with that.
Dority is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Bishop throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Dority works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Bishop throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Dority is trying to get back to full guard.

Bishop throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Dority is looking for a sweep. Bishop is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Dority blocking the ground and pound attempt from Bishop.

Dority is defending against the submission attempts here by Bishop.
Bishop wants to pass the guard but Dority is defending well.
Bishop working Dority over with strikes.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Dority is trying is best to control the position here.

Bishop missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Bishop with the ground and pound but Dority uses the opportunity to regain guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Dority looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Bishop shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Bishop was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Dority holds on tight, trying to prevent any damage.
Dority takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Dority managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Bishop.

Bishop tries for a kimura but Dority is defending well.
Bishop working the ground and pound from side control.
Bishop looks up at the clock and then as Dority takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Bishop smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Bishop wants to lay and pray for a moment but Dority keeps working.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Bishop advances nicely into full mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Dority stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Dority wants it to stay on the feet.
Bryan Bishop is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Dority throws a big shot that misses.
Bishop drops his hands momentarily and Dority takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Dority moves in looking to clinch but Bishop pushes him off.
Dority bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Bishop's head.
Bishop uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Dority.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Dority has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Dority enables Bishop to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Dority manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Bryan Bishop overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Bishop is fighting to break Dority's control of his arms but Dority is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Bishop missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Bishop here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Bishop gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Dority counters with a straight right hand.
A head kick by Bishop misses
and Dority counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Dority loads up on a big right hand but Bishop slips the punch.
Dority throws a series of punches but Bishop moves out of range.

Bishop is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Dority.
Dority throws a left and a right that both miss

and Bishop counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Bishop seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Dority does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Dority regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Bishop.
Bishop forces his way into half guard.

Bishop misses with a head shot. Dority uses the momentum to regain guard.
Bishop is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Dority keeping moving, preventing Bishop from controlling successfully.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Dority has momentary wrist control but Bishop slips an elbow through the middle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dan Dority showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Bishop with a lazy takedown attempt
and Dority counters with a left and a right that stings Bishop.

Dority lands a left and a right that send Bishop crashing to the mat, dazed. Dority thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

Bishop gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Bishop takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Oh Bishop is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Dority closes the distance looking to clinch

and Bishop counters with a single leg into guard. Dority didn't expect that.
Bishop seems to have got his legs back now.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Bishop tries to free his leg and advance position but Dority is retaining full guard.
Bishop lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Dority is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Bishop throws a big right hand that misses.
Dority looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Bishop throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Dority works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Bishop is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Bishop shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Dority as he jumps to the side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bryan Bishop. That's going to take a lot out of him.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Bishop staying out of range there.
Dority stuffs the takedown attempt from Bishop. Bishop gets slowly back to his feet.
Dority might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Bishop shoots in and bounces Dority off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Bishop content to stall in guard here.

Bishop postures up in Dority's guard and throws a big left but Dority blocks it.
Bishop wants to control from the top but Dority keeps moving.
Dority looking for a sweep. Not yet Dority, not yet.
Bishop with a flurry of punches that miss.
Bishop trying to control but Dority is working from the bottom.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Bishop's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Bishop trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Dority manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Dority throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Dority throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Bishop works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Bishop might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Dority wants to get up but he can't break Bishop's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Dority gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Bishop to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Dan Dority comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Dority has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
