Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tristan Newman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rusty Shackleford (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tristan Newman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rusty Shackleford!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Ryoma Takatsuka and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shackleford bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Newman might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Newman has one of Shackleford's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.
Newman tries to buck Shackleford off but Shackleford is having none of it.
Newman struggling a bit here.

Shackleford decides to stand up, so the ref orders Newman to his feet.
Newman really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Shackleford is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Newman's half guard.
Shackleford not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Still in half guard, Shackleford seems content to control.
Newman blocking the ground and pound attempt from Shackleford.

Shackleford escapes and gets back to his feet.
Shackleford keeps the fight on the outside.

Shackleford has managed to clinch.
Newman looking to throw knees to the head but Shackleford is blocking nicely.
The referee is keeping an eye on Shackleford - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Shackleford is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Newman can't fight it off and eventually Shackleford manages to take the fight to the floor. Newman looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Shackleford loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Newman can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Shackleford controls the pace.
Shackleford stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Newman swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Newman wants to hit a switch here but Shackleford passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Newman there!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Shackleford controlling from mount.
Newman is trying desperately to improve position.
Shackleford throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Newman because Shackleford loaded up on that one.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Newman manages to regain half guard whilst avoiding the strikes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shackleford feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Shackleford has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Newman is controlling Shackleford's posture.
Shackleford trying to control but Newman is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shackleford wants to get up but he can't break Newman's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Newman is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Shackleford is controlling him.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Shackleford drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Shackleford wants to control but Newman is keeping him busy.
Shackleford creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Newman sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Shackleford wants to take a breather but Newman manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Shackleford.
Shackleford slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Shackleford pushes down on Newman's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Shackleford looks to land a strike but Newman avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Shackleford passes Newman's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Newman keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Newman is staying active underneath Shackleford, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Shackleford is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Shackleford seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Newman does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Newman is trying to control but can't.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Shackleford dives in and scores a takedown into Newman's guard.
Shackleford not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Shackleford decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Newman, up you get!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shackleford tries to close the distance and clinch but Newman swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rusty Shackleford showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Shackleford wants to clinch up but Newman keeps it at a distance.
Newman half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Shackleford takes the fight into the clinch.

Shackleford works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Shackleford accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Shackleford has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Shackleford throws a solid leg kick but Newman takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Shackleford.

Shackleford fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Newman, pushing him back against the cage.

Shackleford has Newman pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Shackleford pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Newman tumbling to the mat - Shackleford dives into Newman's guard.
Shackleford stays in close to Newman's body and controls the position.
Newman is controlling Shackleford's posture.

Shackleford working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Shackleford looking to pass the guard.
Shackleford controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Shackleford trying to control the position from guard on top but Newman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Shackleford looking to sit in guard and control but Newman gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Shackleford has Newman pulled in close to control his posture.

Newman stops Shackleford from standing up.
Shackleford is adopting a defensive guard.

Shackleford working for a triangle but Newman defends it easily.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Shackleford throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
As Shackleford tries to get set, Newman tries to push him back and clinch up but Shackleford manages to avoid the attempt.
Rusty Shackleford is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Shackleford scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Newman waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Shackleford.
Rusty Shackleford seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Newman wants to clinch but Shackleford slips to the side
and Shackleford counters with a one-two to the body.


Newman is rocked!
Newman is holding his hands too far apart here. Shackleford throws a hard, straight punch right down the pipe and BOOM! Newman is out! That punch landed square on the jaw - what a shot!
