Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Jon Askren! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Terakado Tessai! The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Phil Schofield and Donald Grub.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sloppy strikes from Tessai. Those never looked like landing. Askren tries to counter with a takedown but Tessai is quick to defend against it. Tessai throws the left hand but Askren avoids the punch easily. Tessai rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Askren counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Askren lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Askren is looking to advance position but Tessai won't allow it. Askren scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Askren seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Askren performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
That's one minute gone in the round. Askren missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Tessai trying to control here.
We've been hearing that Askren has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish. Askren seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Askren seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Tessai for as long as he can get away with. Askren has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Askren working the head and body with strikes. Askren looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Askren trying to control the action but Tessai is working from the bottom. Well, if Askren is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Tessai keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Askren throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Askren is trying to control. Tessai wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Excellent takedown into side control there by Askren. Tessai is letting Askren control him for a moment. Tessai can't do much from the bottom here. Askren controlling the position from side mount.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Tessai takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Askren controls the position. Askren trying to control the position but Tessai is working away. Sloppy strikes there by Askren. Tessai trying to remain calm as Askren controls from the top position. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Askren cracks Tessai with a big elbow. Askren throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jon Askren dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Askren scores with the left hand. Tessai knows he should have avoided that one. Askren throws a looping overhand right but Tessai ducks down to avoid it. Askren misses with a takedown and Tessai counters with a lovely straight right hand! Askren throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Askren throws a low kick, looking for Tessai's leg but Tessai calmly moves out of range. Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Askren lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Tessai has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Tessai and we're back underway with a touch of gloves. Tessai throws out a counter right but Askren avoids it with no problem. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Askren throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Askren shoots in but no luck this time. Tessai ducks under a wild hook from Askren.
That's one minute gone in the round. Askren shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Askren showed some decent athleticism there. Askren looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Askren scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Askren uses his free foot to push down on Tessai's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Tessai. Askren controlling from mount. Tessai really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Askren. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Askren has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Tessai's face.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Askren working away from the top, dropping strikes. Askren can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Tessai is looking to escape. Askren working Tessai over with strikes here. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Askren lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Tessai is rocked! Askren is in full mount looking to finish with strikes. He lands a big shot, followed by another and Tessai goes limp! The ref jumps in to end the fight - a big win for Askren!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Jon Askren! Jon Askren decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
