PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Shaun Hale (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lance Lewis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Lance Lewis was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Shaun Hale!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Lance Lewis!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, James Glass and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Hale.
Lewis looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Lewis drives through with a takedown into Hale's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Hale managing to control the position.
Lewis wants to get up but he can't break Hale's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Hale definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hale wants to stand and escape but Lewis is having none of it.
Hale is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Hale pushes Lewis off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Hale tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Lewis paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Lewis is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Hale with a body shot.

Lewis shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hale's guard.
Hale wants to get back to his feet but Lewis is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Hale is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hale lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Lewis looking for a sweep. Not yet Lewis, not yet.
Lewis can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Hale controls the pace.

Lewis is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Lewis can't keep his opponent in guard - Hale advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Lewis is looking to improve his position.
Hale wants to stand but Lewis has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Lewis is staying active underneath Hale, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hale content to control rather than advance.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Hale thuds his right hand into Lewis's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Hale throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Lewis.
Hale fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Lewis avoids it really well and circles away.
Lewis tries to counter by closing the distance.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Lewis is looking to land body kicks.
Hale looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Hale shoots in but Lewis avoids the takedown attempt easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Shaun Hale will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Hale tries to land a leg kick but Lewis saw it coming and moves away.
Lewis tries to counter with a clinch but Hale shakes him off and moves away.
A decent looking cross lands there for Hale.
Hale misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Lewis.
Shaun Hale is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Lewis gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Hale counters with a three punch combo that has Lewis backing up. Lewis nods at Hale to acknowledge the strikes.

Hale forces Lewis back against the cage and clinches.

Hale ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Hale no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Lewis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hale swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Hale wants to sweep but no luck.

Hale is trying to control the position but Lewis postures up.

Hale has his foot on Lewis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Lewis works his way back into a safe position though.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Lewis working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Hale on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Hale tries to get out of the position.

Lewis drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Hale dives on top into guard.

Hale knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Lewis on the ground.
Hale's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Hale seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Lewis for as long as he can get away with.
Lewis is trying to keep Hale in close.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hale seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Hale's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hale throws a body punch but Lewis moves out of range.

Lewis gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Lewis is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Lewis looking for a sweep. Not yet Lewis, not yet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lewis is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Lewis controls Hale momentarily but Hale frees himself.
Lewis avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Hale wanted to stand there but Lewis had control of the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hale stands up over Lewis, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Hale is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Hale misses with a body kick.
Hale dives in and grabs Lewis's left leg, looking for a takedown. Lewis pushes down on Hale's head and hops out.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Hale is trying hard to land a takedown here. Lewis sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Hale is looking to clinch but Lewis is avoiding it.
Hale shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Lewis as he jumps to the side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shaun Hale. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Lewis avoids the head kick by Hale.
Lewis changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hale tries to avoid it but Lewis manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hale to the ground. Hale escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Hale shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Lewis is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Lewis leaves Hale with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hale shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Hale fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Lewis avoids a kick to the body.
Lewis lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shaun Hale dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Lewis clinches up with Hale and pushes him back against the cage.

Lewis tries to pull guard but Hale holds him up against the cage and eventually Lewis drops back down to his feet.
Hale tries a knee to the head but Lewis blocks it.

Hale breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Hale wants to control from the top but Lewis keeps moving.

Lewis is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Lewis is looking for a triangle but Hale pushes his legs off easily.
Hale engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hale stopping the sweep attempt from Lewis.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Hale has closed the distance and engaged Lewis in a clinch.
Lewis is trying to pull guard but Hale turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Hale breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Hale looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Lewis is fending him off so far but Hale persists. Nope, Lewis circles away and we're back to standing.

Lewis gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Hale to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Hale has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Hale stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lewis swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Hale seems to be looking for submissions.
Hale perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Hale is looking to take a break and control but Lewis is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Shaun Hale is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Lewis is looking to improve his position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hale seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Hale has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Lewis defend it? Hale steps over the head and cranks it - Lewis is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Hale!
