PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Luke Newton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Saicedo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Luke Newton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tommy Saicedo!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Mauricio Rocha and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Newton tries to keep at a distance but Saicedo has taken the fight into the clinch.
Newton fails to pull guard.

Newton manages to break the clinch.
Newton really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Saicedo moves into range and clinches up with Newton.

Saicedo pulls guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Saicedo is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Newton wants to stand but Saicedo has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Saicedo is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Saicedo manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Newton manages to get himself to full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Saicedo won't allow Newton to sweep him here.
Newton knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Saicedo on the ground.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Saicedo shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Newton manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Newton wants to control the position but Saicedo says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Newton gets back to full guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Saicedo seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Saicedo tries to free his leg and advance position but Newton is retaining full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Saicedo closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Newton did well to prevent Saicedo getting side control.
Saicedo seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Saicedo trying to mount his opponent but Newton defends it.
Saicedo wants to control but Newton is keeping him busy.

Saicedo uses his free foot to push down on Newton's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Newton.
Newton is breathing heavily.

Newton is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Tommy Saicedo dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Saicedo moves into the clinch.

Saicedo's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Newton throws a head kick but Saicedo moves out of range.
Saicedo has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Saicedo throws a nice looking combination but Newton bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Newton tries to roll over but Saicedo keeps him under control.

Saicedo thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Newton's head.
Newton wants to improve his position but Saicedo is controlling well.

Saicedo clinches up with Newton and pushes him back against the cage.

Saicedo works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Saicedo can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Newton is looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tommy Saicedo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Newton lands one or two decent shots to the body here. Although from his own half guard, he's not going to be causing too much damage.

Saicedo throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Newton because Saicedo loaded up on that one.
Saicedo lands a couple of good shots and Newton has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

You can see the frustration on Newton's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Saicedo working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Saicedo slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
Newton tries to break free.

Saicedo sinks in the hooks and is looking for the choke. He's got it! Newton taps out!
