PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Zin Berkantov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lazarus Saunders (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Berkantov might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Zaidi. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Zin Berkantov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Lazarus Saunders!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Berkantov tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Saunders doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Saunders looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Berkantov gets caught flat footed, as Saunders shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Berkantov keeping moving, preventing Saunders from controlling successfully.

Berkantov looking for a guillotine here but Saunders defends easily.
Berkantov controls Saunders momentarily but Saunders frees himself.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Berkantov had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Saunders defends it easily.

The fight stays on the outside here - Berkantov looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Berkantov lands a two punch combo.

Saunders fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Berkantov to the ground. Saunders is now in Berkantov's guard.
Berkantov not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Berkantov is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Saunders is aware though and is defending well.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Berkantov is on top in guard.


Saunders is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Saunders throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Berkantov escapes and throws Saunders's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Berkantov has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Saunders takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Lazarus Saunders will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Berkantov gets a takedown into half guard.
Berkantov seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Berkantov is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Saunders is staying active underneath Berkantov, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Berkantov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Saunders keeps working.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Berkantov tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Saunders manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Berkantov throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Saunders tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Berkantov is in Saunders's guard.
Saunders utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Berkantov would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Saunders looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Berkantov got a little sloppy there for a moment and Saunders has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Berkantov has managed to get both his arms back between Saunders's legs - danger averted.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Saunders keeping moving, preventing Berkantov from controlling successfully.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Berkantov dives in and scores a takedown into Saunders's guard.
Saunders is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Saunders is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Berkantov closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Saunders quickly recovers to half guard.

Berkantov closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Saunders is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Saunders has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Weed Nation. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.

Berkantov shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Berkantov showed some decent athleticism there.

Saunders bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Berkantov's guard.

Berkantov can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Saunders controls the pace.
Saunders wants to pass the guard but Berkantov is keeping the position.
Berkantov trying to keep a closed guard but Saunders is proving a slippery customer.

Zin Berkantov showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Berkantov has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

As Zin Berkantov got his breath back, he grabbed the microphone and managed to blurt out the following: I am the best!. Dont agree with me? come here and prove me otherwise.'.
Lazarus Saunders spoke after the fight, saying 'Everyone looses, and i guess this was my time, congrats to my opponent, he is a formidable opponent. I shall come back stronger than aver.'.
