PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jermain Leaseau (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dennis Pegeant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jermain Leaseau!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Dennis Pegeant!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Hirohito Nitta and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Leaseau swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Pegeant counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Leaseau is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Leaseau tries to kick Pegeant off but Pegeant keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Pegeant missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Leaseau controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
Leaseau is looking for a sweep. Pegeant is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pegeant wants to take a breather but Leaseau is having none of it.
Pegeant prevents Leaseau from improving his position.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Leaseau wants to control the action here but instead Pegeant manages to pass to full mount!
Leaseau tries to reverse the position but Pegeant maintains control.
Pegeant breaks from Leaseau's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Pegeant wants to control the pace but Leaseau is squirming around nicely.
Leaseau sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Leaseau wants to control but Pegeant is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Pegeant is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Leaseau regains full guard. Nicely done.

Leaseau working for a triangle but Pegeant defends it easily.

Leaseau has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pegeant can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Leaseau looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Pegeant has picked Leaseau up and slammed him! Leaseau can't keep hold of the triangle and Pegeant manages to pass to side control!

You can see the frustration on Leaseau's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Leaseau is looking for a sweep.
Pegeant wants to lay and pray for a moment but Leaseau keeps working.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Leaseau gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Pegeant controlling the pace for now.
Leaseau tries to lock up and control but Pegeant gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Leaseau might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Pegeant looking to control but Leaseau is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Pegeant is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dennis Pegeant dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Pegeant is trying hard to land a takedown here. Leaseau sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Leaseau is looking for a counter combo.
Leaseau is looking to clinch.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Pegeant is defended easily by Leaseau.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Pegeant.
Pegeant has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Leaseau is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Jermain Leaseau has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dennis Pegeant.
Leaseau misses with a body shot.
Leaseau goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Pegeant shoots for a takedown but Leaseau saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Leaseau tries to close the distance and clinch but Pegeant swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
We've been told by Leaseau's head coaches at Tōshi that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Leaseau misses with a few strikes there.
Pegeant tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Pegeant stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Pegeant wants it to stay on the feet.

Pegeant shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Leaseau looking for a sweep. Not yet Leaseau, not yet.
Leaseau seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Pegeant makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Leaseau wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Leaseau not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Leaseau is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Leaseau is trying to control the position from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Leaseau misses with a double jab.

Leaseau looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Pegeant!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Leaseau is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Pegeant is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Pegeant is trying to control Leaseau's posture but Leaseau avoids it.

Leaseau tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Leaseau has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Pegeant is looking for a sweep.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Leaseau wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Pegeant, who protects the arm well.
Leaseau wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pegeant keeps working.
Pegeant takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Pegeant is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Leaseau's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jermain Leaseau dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Leaseau scores with a sloppy right hand. Pegeant should have avoided that one.
Jermain Leaseau seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Leaseau throws a series of punches but Pegeant avoids them all with ease.

Horrible takedown attempt by Leaseau or perhaps it was just good defense by Pegeant, which made it look bad.
Leaseau fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Pegeant manages to avoid it.
Pegeant dodges the punch combination from Leaseau.
Pegeant wants to counter with a clinch but Leaseau pushes him away.
Pegeant misses with a takedown attempt - Leaseau sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Leaseau looks to score with a jab to the body but Pegeant is just out of range.
Pegeant wants to counter the offense by Leaseau and move into the clinch position.
Leaseau tries to close the distance and clinch but Pegeant swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Leaseau scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Pegeant shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Leaseau pinned against the cage. Leaseau gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Jermain Leaseau has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dennis Pegeant.
No luck for Pegeant with that takedown attempt.
Pegeant takes a body punch but keeps moving.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Pegeant is defended easily by Leaseau.
Pegeant feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Leaseaus jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Pegeant swats away the attempt to clinch by Leaseau.
Leaseau throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Leaseau is looking to wear down Pegeant with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Pegeant decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Leaseau looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Pegeant is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Leaseau tries to hold on but Pegeant postures up.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Leaseau is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Pegeant controlling his opponent.
Leaseau is wriggling around trying to escape.

Pegeant working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

Pegeant goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Leaseau turns into him and now he's in Pegeant's guard.
Leaseau is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jermain Leaseau.
I think Leaseau has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
