PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ted Ershaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sandy Hawkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hawkins comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Enter Sandman kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Sandy Hawkins has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ted Ershaw!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sandy Hawkins!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Steve Smith and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hawkins misses with a few strikes there.

Hawkins closes the distance and clinches.
Ershaw tries to stall but Hawkins uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Hawkins has Ershaw pressed against the cage.
Ershaw tries to score a body lock takedown but Hawkins shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Hawkins gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Ershaw regains guard.
Ershaw is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hawkins won't allow Ershaw to sweep him here.
Ershaw avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Hawkins won't allow Ershaw to get back to his feet.
Hawkins seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Hawkins thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Hawkins is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Ershaw tries a head kick but it misses.

Hawkins moves into range and clinches up with Ershaw.
Hawkins is working for takedown but Ershaw is calmly controlling the position for now.
Hawkins misses with a hook from the clinch.

Hawkins manages to break the clinch.
Hawkins shoots for a takedown but Ershaw saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Hawkins fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Ershaw sprawls well initially but Hawkins persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Hawkins is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Hawkins is keen to just control but Ershaw is a slippery customer.

Ershaw wants to improve his position but Hawkins is controlling well.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Hawkins looks to land a strike but Ershaw avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

Hawkins drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hawkins jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Hawkins closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Ershaw to the mat! Ershaw manages to get full guard.
Ershaw is breathing heavily.
Hawkins trying to control the position from guard on top but Ershaw is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hawkins advances to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ershaw is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Hawkins winds up and cracks Ershaw with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Hawkins is controlling the pace.
Hawkins works his foot free and advances to mount.
Hawkins controlling from the full mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hawkins with shots to the head and body - Ershaw looks very uncomfortable down there.
Hawkins has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Ershaw's face.

Hawkins is working for a guillotine from mount but Ershaw frees his head quite easily.

Hawkins tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Hawkins has hold of Ershaw's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Ershaw manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Hawkins connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sandy Hawkins dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Hawkins gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Hawkins doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Ershaw is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Hawkins tightens his grip and picks Ershaw up, before dumping him to the ground. Ershaw manages to land in guard.
Ershaw working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Hawkins.
Hawkins throws a big right hand that misses.
Hawkins wants to control from the top but Ershaw keeps moving.
Hawkins showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Ershaw looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hawkins is one step ahead there.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Hawkins fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Hawkins moves in looking to clinch but Ershaw pushes him off.
Hawkins shoots in but no luck this time.

Ershaw feints and as Hawkins raises his hands in defense, Ershaw changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Hawkins has Ershaw pulled in close to control his posture.
Ershaw has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Ershaw won't allow Hawkins to sweep him here.

Let's hope that Hawkins has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Ershaw has gone for a leg lock! Hawkins slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ershaw's guard.

Ershaw wants to control the position but Hawkins says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Hawkins is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Hawkins with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hawkins is nestled in close to Ershaw, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Hawkins decides to return to a standing position.

Hawkins looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Hawkins working for a triangle but Ershaw defends it easily.
Hawkins manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ershaw manages to get himself to full guard.
Hawkins content to stall in guard here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sandy Hawkins showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Hawkins takes the fight into the clinch.
Ershaw tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Hawkins smiles and moves away.

Hawkins shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Hawkins showed some decent athleticism there.
Hawkins landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Ershaw is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Hawkins scores with a couple of nice shots.
Ershaw is trying to maintain the position but Hawkins is very close to passing his half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Despite being in the dominant position, Sandy Hawkins just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Hawkins shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Hawkins cracks Ershaw with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Hawkins is going olschool here, as he tries to force Ershaw to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Ershaw shrugs it off.
Hawkins postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Ershaw looks a forlorn figure.

Hawkins has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Hawkins is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Ershaw can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Ershaw can't escape the position.
Hawkins controlling his opponent.

Hawkins is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Hawkins wants to clinch up but Ershaw keeps it at a distance.
Hawkins tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Ershaw swivels and escapes.
Sandy Hawkins seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Hawkins pushes Ershaw up against the cage in a clinch.

Hawkins pulls guard successfully.

Hawkins is looking for a triangle but Ershaw pushes his legs off easily.
Ershaw passes into half guard.
Ershaw slows the pace down in half guard.
Hawkins is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Ershaw's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Ershaw's back!
Ershaw is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Sandy Hawkins has got the better of the ground game so far.

Hawkins working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.

Ershaw is really stuck here.
Hawkins cracks Ershaw with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Ershaw from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.
Hawkins is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Sandy Hawkins is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Ted Ershaw has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
