PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Junior Dos Santos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cain Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Velasquez has chosen Kryptonite as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Junior Dos Santos!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Cain Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Topper Green and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Velasquez dives in and grabs Santos's left leg, looking for a takedown. Santos pushes down on Velasquez's head and hops out.
Santos connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
We've been told by Santos's head coaches at Sydney Shootfighting that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Velasquez gets a double leg takedown into Santos's guard.
Velasquez wants to pass the guard but Santos is keeping the position.
Velasquez trying to control the position from guard on top but Santos is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Velasquez trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Velasquez drops back looking for a leg! Santos is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Santos manages to kick Velasquez off! Velasquez jumps back into Santos's guard.
Santos is looking to stand up but Velasquez isn't so interested in that idea.
Velasquez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Santos keeping moving, preventing Velasquez from controlling successfully.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Velasquez accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Santos wants to sweep here but Velasquez controlling him for the moment.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Velasquez is thwarting Santos's attempts to control the position.

Santos manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Velasquez keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Velasquez breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Santos stuffs the takedown.
Santos throws a big counter combination but Velasquez scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Velasquez lands a lovely overhand right.
Santos stuffs the takedown attempt from Velasquez. Velasquez gets slowly back to his feet.
A little feinted left hand from Santos on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Junior Dos Santos has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cain Velasquez.

Velasquez gets the takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Santos can't do much from the bottom here.
Velasquez looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Santos is avoiding damage well.

Velasquez trying to control the action but Santos is working from the bottom.
Santos tries to bench press Velasquez off him but Velasquez keeps the position.
Velasquez working the ground and pound from side control.
Santos taking punishment in the form of punches.
Velasquez misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Velasquez in side control lands a decent elbow.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Velasquez throws a strike aimed at the side of Santos's head but Santos avoids it well.

Velasquez is trying to get an arm triangle but Santos is defending well.

Velasquez tries to move into full mount but can't pass Santos's legs.
Santos tries to escape but Velasquez is in control.
Velasquez scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Santos to see if he's OK.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Velasquez working his ground and pound in the gym.
Santos is trying to improve his position.
Velasquez lands a decent elbow from side control.
Velasquez lands a few punches from side control.

Velasquez is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Santos is trying to escape and Velasquez transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Santos is forced to tap! Nice work there by Velasquez! Very nice indeed!

Our winner, Cain Velasquez, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
