Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Namba Babakla (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonah Sorentino (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Babakla kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Dhifo Shaacir ku dhufo Hit. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
16 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Namba Babakla! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jonah Sorentino! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Edson Gomes and Seu Braga.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sorentino looks to land a combination but Babakla avoids it well. Sorentino throws a right and a left that Babakla avoids nicely. Babakla looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Sorentino is fending him off so far but Babakla persists. Nope, Sorentino circles away and we're back to standing. Babakla rushes Sorentino and presses him up against the ropes. Babakla drops down looking for an ankle pick but Sorentino pulls his leg out and moves away.
Babakla closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the ropes. Babakla wants a takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Namba Babakla. That's going to take a lot out of him. Babakla goes for a takedown in the clinch but Sorentino prevents it.
Sorentino is defending well against a takedown attempt. Babakla drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Sorentino pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. The fight moves into the clinch position. Sorentino goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Babakla is looking to take this one to the mat. Sorentino tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Babakla's elbow.

Babakla is working for a takedown up against the ropes. He can't get it on this occasion though. I was talking to Babakla's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight. Babakla decides to pull guard. Babakla looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Sorentino wants to stand but Babakla is controlling his posture from full guard. Babakla looking for a guillotine here but Sorentino defends easily.
Babakla working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sorentino doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sorentino manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Sorentino must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Babakla had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Sorentino defends it easily.

Sorentino would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Babakla throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Sorentino wants to stand but Babakla has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Babakla working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sorentino doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sorentino manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Sorentino avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Babakla is on top in guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Babakla is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Babakla postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Sorentino is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Babakla, into his guard. Babakla tries to land a sweep but no joy. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Babakla bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sorentino's guard.

Namba Babakla dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Babakla gets in close and instigates a clinch. Babakla blocking some punches.
Sorentino lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage. Babakla keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Sorentino's efforts to push away. Babakla tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Sorentino smiles and moves away.
Babakla gets a clinch. Sorentino has had enough of the clinch but Babakla keeps him there for the moment. Babakla drags the fight down to the ground.
Sorentino won't allow Babakla to sweep him here. Sorentino trying to stand up but can't free himself from Babakla's guard. Babakla might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Babakla has his foot on Sorentino's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sorentino works his way back into a safe position though. Babakla looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Sorentino avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Babakla bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sorentino's guard. Babakla trying to control but Sorentino is working from the bottom. Babakla works a leg free and moves into half guard. Namba Babakla overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Babakla not landing any meaningful shots this time. Sorentino is not content to let Babakla control the position. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Sorentino can do anything to dispel that myth.

Babakla is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Sorentino is just riding it out for now. Babakla eventually gives up the hold. Babakla is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Babakla here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man. That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Sorentino avoids a series of strikes thrown by Babakla.

He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sorentino can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Sorentino tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Babakla gets back to half guard. Babakla makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Babakla. Babakla has his feet on Sorentino's thighs here. He's pushed Sorentino off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Sorentino screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!

After the fight, Namba Babakla was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
