Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Renato Babawto! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rocky Balboa! The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Babawto shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Balboa manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Balboa keeping moving, preventing Babawto from controlling successfully. Babawto prevents Balboa from getting back to his feet. Babawto not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Babawto looking to pass the guard. Babawto works a leg free and moves into half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Balboa pushes Babawto off looking to stand but Babawto dives back in and keeps control.
Babawto lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Balboa is trying to stand back up but Babawto is controlling him
That's one minute gone in the round. Babawto seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Balboa wants to get back to his feet.
Babawto is controlling the pace.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Balboa is trying to stand up here but Babawto is controlling him well.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Balboa scores with a shot to the body.
Balboa wants to clinch up but Babawto keeps it at a distance. Renato Babawto seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. No joy there for Balboa, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Babawto doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body. Balboa throws a series of punches but Babawto moves out of range. Babawto closes this distance looking for a takedown but Balboa circles away. Rocky Balboa is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Babawto drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Balboa is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Babawto might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Babawto is pushing down on Balboa's leg trying to pass to half guard. Balboa is fighting to maintain full guard but Babawto has managed to sneak the leg through. Babawto is taking a breather. Balboa says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Babawto uses his free foot to push down on Balboa's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Balboa. Babawto landing strikes from the mount.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Babawto lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Babawto lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Balboa is rocked! Balboa's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. Babawto takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Babawto can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Balboa is looking to escape. Babawto landing strikes from the mount and Balboa is in trouble! Balboa is still in real trouble! Can Babawto finish him? Babawto landing shots from mount. Babawto has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Babawto jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Balboa manages to avoid the submission attempt.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Babawto tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Babawto works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Balboa seems to have recovered his senses. We've been informed that Balboa has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight. Balboa is not content to let Babawto control the position. Babawto has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Balboa is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Babawto yanks on the arm and Balboa is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Babawto.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Renato Babawto! Renato Babawto looked relieved post fight as he said the following; 'Believe in Jiu Jitsu My Friend!!'.
