PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rosario Pierce (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cain Carlson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cain Carlson will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rosario Pierce!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cain Carlson!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Chris Downing and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pierce keeps the fight on the outside.
Carlson tries to clinch but Pierce is having none of it.
Cain Carlson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Carlson dives in and grabs Pierce's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pierce pushes down on Carlson's head and hops out.
Pierce tries to counter by clinching up but Carlson breaks away and moves out of range.
Carlson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Pierce.
Pierce wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Pierce leaves Carlson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Carlson tries to clinch there but Pierce circles away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice takedown defense from Pierce. No joy for Carlson on that attempt.
Rosario Pierce has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cain Carlson.

Pierce tries to stand but can't do so whilst Carlson controls his leg.

Carlson manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Pierce keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Pierce has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Pierce drags the fight down to the ground.

Pierce working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Carlson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Carlson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Pierce has an active guard here but Carlson has managed to pass into half guard.

Pierce misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Carlson seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pierce does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Pierce is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Carlson pulls his head out easily.

Carlson seems to be working for a kimura but Pierce defends the submission attempt.

Carlson shoots for a double leg takedown but Pierce sprawls well. He's pushed Carlson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Pierce swats away the attempt to clinch by Carlson.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Carlson cracks Pierce with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Carlson misses with a combination

and Pierce counters by moving into the clinch.
Pierce is trying to force a seperation but Carlson has the dominant position.
Pierce has had enough of the clinch but Carlson keeps him there for the moment.
Carlson has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Pierce avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Carlson tries to pull guard but Pierce won't allow it.

Pierce escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Carlson has his takedown stuffed

and Pierce decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Carlson's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carlson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Pierce paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Pierce feinted with a counter takedown.

Carlson swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Pierce.
Carlson misses with a takedown attempt - Pierce sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Carlson is trying to keep Pierce in close.
Pierce would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Carlson shoots in and drives through. Pierce sprawls well.

Carlson tries to close the distance and clinch but Pierce swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Carlson tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Pierce has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Pierce is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Pierce connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Pierce scores with a couple of good head shots there.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Pierce cracks Carlson with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Pierce is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Carlson can do to turn this around?

Pierce has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Carlson has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Pierce has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
You can see the frustration on Carlson's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Pierce is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Carlson defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Pierce is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Carlson is defending well though. Pierce let's go of the attempt for now.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Pierce keeps control of the position as Carlson tries to break free.

Carlson throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Pierce's waist but Pierce gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Carlson off to one side.

Pierce decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Pierce is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Carlson is just riding it out for now. Pierce eventually gives up the hold.

Carlson is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and Pierce has latched onto it... Big trouble! Pierce pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Carlson is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Pierce!
