PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Fred Bernard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jesse Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Fred Bernard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jesse Jones!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Roger Salmon and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones slaps away a takedown attempt from Bernard, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Jones is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.
Bernard shoots for a double leg takedown but Jones sprawls well. He's pushed Bernard's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Bernard shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Bernard throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Bernard throws a big elbow that misses.
Bernard throws a big right hand that misses.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jones keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Bernard looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Jones not doing much here.
Jones tries to pass the half guard into mount. Bernard knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Bernard won't allow Jones to pass to mount.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Bernard really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Bernard fails with the takedown
and Jones connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Fred Bernard. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bernard tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Jones defends well and Bernard ends up having to push Jones into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
It seemed like Jones was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Bernard.

Bernard goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Jones rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Bernard's guard! Nice work there by Jones!
Bernard is breathing heavily.

Bernard is looking for a triangle here but Jones uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
You can see the frustration on Bernard's face as Jones controls the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Bernard tries to get back to half guard but can't.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

No luck for Bernard with that takedown attempt.

Bernard drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Bernard throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bernard throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Jones works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Jones is trying to stand.

Bernard throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Jones kicks Bernard off and gets back to his feet.
Bernard gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Jones connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Bernard shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Fred Bernard. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bernard shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jones as he jumps to the side.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bernard tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jones sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Bernard somewhat.
Bernard has his takedown stuffed
and Jones counters with a massive head kick! KABOOM! Bernard is out cold! A devastating KO!

Our winner, Jesse Jones, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
