PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Steve Boyer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Karl Marx (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Karl Marx is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Steve Boyer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Karl Marx!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Chris Saunders and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Marx misses with a jab to the body
and Boyer counters with a two punch combo.
Boyer stuffs the takedown attempt from Marx. Marx gets slowly back to his feet.

Marx shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Boyer napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Boyer trying his best to control but Marx has mounted him.
Marx sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Boyer working to try and regain half guard.
Marx tries to control but Boyer wriggling away.
Marx is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Boyer can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Marx fails to take his opponent's back.

Boyer is rocked!
Marx tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Oh Boyer is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Boyer is in all sorts of trouble here.
Boyer tries to hold on but Marx pushes him away.
Boyer reaches up to try and control the position but Marx seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Boyer rolls and tries to escape and now Marx has his back!

Marx working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Boyer is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Boyer seems to have got his legs back now.
Marx gets his hands free as Boyer looks to control.
Marx trying to control momentarily.
Boyer looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands.

Boyer prevents Marx from getting a body triangle.
Boyer trying to control the position but Marx manages to sink in the hooks.
Boyer trying to get back to his feet but Marx is in full control for now.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Marx has the hooks in. Boyer is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Marx lands an elbow to the side of the head.

Marx tries to keep control of the position but Boyer is staying busy.
Boyer covers up after that shot from Marx.

Boyer is trying to get back to his feet. He's worked up on to his knees and now he's on his feet with his head on the canvas, trying to shake Marx off. It looks like it's working - Marx slides off, much to his dismay, and we're back to standing! Boyer displaying calm under pressure there.
Marx shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Boyer pinned against the cage. Boyer gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Marx darts in looking for a takedown but Boyer gets double underhooks and turns Marx into the cage.
Steve Boyer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Karl Marx.
Marx defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Boyer.
Marx will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
It looked like Boyer was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Marx looks winded!

Boyer is looking to clinch but Marx is avoiding it.
The fight stays on the outside here - Boyer looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Boyer stuffs the takedown attempt from Marx. Marx gets slowly back to his feet.

Marx closes the distance and clinches.

Boyer is trying to pull guard but Marx turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Marx looking to throw knees to the head but Boyer is blocking nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Karl Marx dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Marx tries for a takedown but Boyer circles away easily
and Boyer counters with a nice leg kick.

Boyer tries to sprawl but Marx drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Marx sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Boyer defending well though.
Marx trying to control the pace.
Marx working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Marx wants to free his trapped foot but Boyer is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Boyer regains full guard. Nicely done.
Marx wants to stand but Boyer is controlling his posture from full guard.

Boyer looking for a guillotine here but Marx defends easily.
Marx stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Boyer swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Boyer looking to hit a scissor sweep but Marx is one step ahead there.
We've been informed that Marx has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Marx won't allow Boyer to get back to his feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Boyer is trying to hold Marx in close to prevent damage but Marx has managed to pass into half guard.
Marx perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Boyer is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Marx's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Marx's back!
Boyer really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Marx is really stuck here.
Marx rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Boyer throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Marx moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Boyer postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Marx wants to sweep but no luck.
Marx tries to strike from the bottom.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Boyer accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Boyer postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Marx preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Boyer loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Marx utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Marx takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Marx throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Boyer tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Marx is in Boyer's guard.

Boyer had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Marx defends it easily.

Marx trying to control the position from guard on top but Boyer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Marx is working Boyer over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Marx's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Boyer throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Marx escapes and throws Boyer's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Marx trying to control the position but Boyer is working away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Boyer is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Karl Marx showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Marx slows down the pace here.

Marx is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Boyer is keeping busy.
Marx is persisting with his attempts to control the action in the clinch, rather than do any real damage.

Marx throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Boyer blocks it with crossed arms.

Marx will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Boyer up against the cage.
The ref breaks the fighters up, due to lack of action by Karl Marx.

Marx throws a knee to the head but misses.
Marx is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Boyer is keeping busy.

Boyer has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Marx avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steve Boyer. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Marx fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Boyer is looking to counter the offense by Marx and move into the clinch.
Boyer connects with a leg kick. Marx looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

Marx circles away from the clinch attempt.
Marx has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Marx prevents Boyer from breaking the clinch.

Boyer pulls Marx into guard.

Marx got a little sloppy there for a moment and Boyer has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Marx has managed to get both his arms back between Boyer's legs - danger averted.
Marx wanted to stand there but Boyer had control of the position.
Boyer looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Marx puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Marx swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Karl Marx!
After winning the bout, Karl Marx thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
