The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rubio fails with a takedown attempt. We've been hearing reports that Rubio has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Bonanza throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Rubio tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Bonanza is in Rubio's guard. Bonanza slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Let's hope that Bonanza has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rubio keeping moving, preventing Bonanza from controlling successfully. Bonanza thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bonanza passes easily into side control. Nice work. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rubio pushes Bonanza away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Bonanza gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Bonanza looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Bonanza tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Bonanza has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Bonanza working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bonanza wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Rubio, who protects the arm well. Rubio is not content to let Bonanza control the position. Bonanza has hold of Rubio's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Rubio tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Bonanza cranks the arm and Rubio screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Rubio, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Claudemir Bonanza!
