Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Not John Smythe! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Leon Cook! The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Hugh Johnson and Bruno Hogan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smythe misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Cook.
Smythe takes a swing at Cook's ribcage but misses. Smythe drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smythe working some strikes from top position. Smythe throwing strikes but missing. Smythe won't allow Cook to sweep him here. Smythe lands a couple of digs. Cook is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Smythe will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Cook is trying to keep Smythe in close.
Cook wants to stand up but Smythe is controlling him. Smythe distracts Cook with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Smythe stays in close to Cook's body and controls the position. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Smythe lands a couple of elbows.
Cook is rocked!
That's one minute gone in the round. Smythe working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Smythe working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Cook's head. Cook looks gassed! Smythe wants to pass the guard but Cook is keeping the position. Smythe decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Cook, up you get! Smythe throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Smythe blocks a head kick by Cook.
Donk. Smythe catches Cook right on the button with a cross. Smythe fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Smythe looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Smythe is looking to advance position but Cook won't allow it. Cook looks like he's trying to stand up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smythe wants to control but Cook is keeping him busy. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Smythe connects with a nice short shot to Cook's temple. Smythe seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Smythe works his way into full mount! The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Smythe lands with some strikes. Cook is still in real trouble! Can Smythe finish him? The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Smythe unloads with some vicious shots from mount and Cook wants out - he looks towards the referee who steps in to save him! Smythe celebrates on the cage and the crowd goes wild!
