PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Elijah Pate (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Deckard Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Deckard Shaw will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Elijah Pate!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Deckard Shaw!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shaw tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Pate manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Shaw tries to clinch but Pate moves out of range.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Shaw.
Pate keeps Shaw under control for a moment.
Shaw is looking to take a break and control but Pate is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Shaw tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pate tries to improve position but can't.
Pate looking for a sweep but Shaw has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Shaw throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Pate because Shaw loaded up on that one.

Pate tries to lock up and control but Shaw gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Shaw is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Pate can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Shaw looking to control but Pate is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Pate is trying to escape the mount.
Shaw trying to control but Pate is having none of it.
Shaw avoids the attempt from Pate to control.
Pate really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Pate is working to get back to half guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Shaw controlling the pace for now.
Pate wants to control but Shaw is having none of it.
Pate can't escape the position.
Pate is working hard here to advance position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Shaw trying to control but Pate is having none of it.

Shaw misses with a head shot.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pate tries to lock up and control but Shaw gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Pate flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.

Pate tries to hold on but Shaw pushes him away.
Pate is desperately trying to improve his position but Shaw has a good base and remains in mount.

Shaw trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Shaw is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Pate is surviving well by controlling Shaw's body position as best he can.
Shaw wants to control the pace but Pate is squirming around nicely.
Shaw throws some wild stikes that Pate manages to avoid easily.
Shaw trying to control but Pate is having none of it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Pate manages to regain half guard. Good work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Deckard Shaw dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Shaw looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Shaw throwing shots but Pate is blocking nicely.
Shaw trying to pass the guard but Pate defending well.
Pate trying to control from the bottom.
Pate is looking for a sweep. Shaw is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Shaw has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Shaw in particular looking to stall.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shaw is trying to control. Pate wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Pate is looking for a sweep. Shaw is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Shaw seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pate does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Shaw - that will leave a mark!
Shaw throws a push kick but Pate slaps the foot to one side.
Pate is looking to counter the offense by Shaw and move into the clinch.
Deckard Shaw is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Shaw shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Pate manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Pate looking for a sweep. Not yet Pate, not yet.

Pate working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shaw doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shaw manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Pate throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Pate looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Pate is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Pate wants to improve his position but instead Shaw has moved into half guard.

Shaw is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Pate defends it well.

Pate is looking to control Shaw's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Pate avoid being mounted?

Shaw slows the pace down in half guard.

Pate wants to control but Shaw is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Pate pulls out of a head kick attempt.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Shaw avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Shaw scores with a nice body kick.
Shaw misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Pate.
Deckard Shaw seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pate misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Pate moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromShaw.

Shaw rushes Pate and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Shaw jumps guard.
Deckard Shaw has got the better of the ground game so far.

Shaw has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Pate is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Shaw.

Deckard Shaw showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Pate gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Pate looking to hit a scissor sweep but Shaw is one step ahead there.

Pate working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shaw doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shaw manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Shaw wants to control from the top but Pate keeps moving.
Pate tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Shaw not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Pate not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
A low kick from Pate is predictable there
and Shaw counters with an inside leg kick.
Shaw tries to clinch but Pate moves out of range.
Pate throws a sloppy head kick and Shaw moves out of range easily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Pate wants to sweep here but Shaw controlling him for the moment.
Shaw postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Pate looking for a sweep. Not yet Pate, not yet.

Shaw gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Pate throws a head kick but Shaw moves out of range.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Shaw blocks a head kick by Pate.

Shaw looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Pate!

Shaw stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Pate gets caught flat footed, as Shaw shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Pate looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Pate keeping moving, preventing Shaw from controlling successfully.

Pate is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Shaw is aware though and is defending well.

Shaw thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Pate is trying to keep Shaw in close.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Shaw trying to control the position from guard on top but Pate is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Shaw is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Pate looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Shaw loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Pate working a defensive guard here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Pate goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
As Pate backs off Shaw throws a huge counter combo but Pate manages to avoid it all.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shaw is looking to clinch but Pate is avoiding it.
Elijah Pate has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Deckard Shaw is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Deckard Shaw comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Shaw has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
