Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Florencio Vinson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Brad Oconnor! The judges for this bout are Josh West, Micheangelo Fripello and Paul Gruel.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Oconnor moves into range and clinches up with Vinson. Vinson works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard. Vinson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Vinson stands up from guard. Let's bang! Oconnor misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Vinson tries to counter with a takedown but Oconnor is quick to defend against it. Oconnor keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Brad Oconnor seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Vinson throws a sloppy head kick and Oconnor moves out of range easily. Vinson fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Oconnor, pushing him back against the cage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Oconnor tries to pull guard but Vinson holds him up against the cage and eventually Oconnor drops back down to his feet.
Vinson could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Vinson tightens his grip and picks Oconnor up, before dumping him to the ground. Oconnor manages to land in guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Vinson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Vinson is stalling in the full guard. Oconnor will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Vinson postures up.
Vinson content to stall in guard here. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Vinson gets to his feet. Oconnor looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Vinson throws a head kick that misses. Oconnor throws a right and a left that Vinson avoids nicely. Oconnor looks winded! Oconnor lands a head kick. Vinson smiles back at him and beckons him forward. Oconnor darts in looking for a takedown but Vinson gets double underhooks and turns Oconnor into the cage. Vinson misses with a head kick.
A lazy body kick from Oconnor and Vinson counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Oconnor wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Vinson manages to pull guard.
Vinson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Oconnor is aware though and is defending well. Vinson throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Vinson lands with a heel strike from the guard.
Vinson is looking to cinch up a triangle. Oconnor throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Vinson's body to avoid the submission. Vinson has instead reached around Oconnor's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Vinson arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
