Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
13 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Josh Howell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jon Stevenson! The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Damien Edna and Darius Henderson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Howell lands a jab. Stevenson throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Howell. Howell throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Stevenson defending well as Howell loads up on a big left hand. Stevenson misses with a two punch combination.
Stevenson has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Howell finds it's way round the side to connect with Stevenson's head. Stevenson tries to bum rush Howell with a series of wild strikes but Howell uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Stevenson throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Howell sees it coming and avoids it easily. Stevenson throws out a loose jab but Howell uses good head movement to avoid it. Stevenson misses with a looping right. Howell scores with a punch to the head. Sloppy strikes from Stevenson. Those never looked like landing. Howell connects with a looping right hand.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. A punch lands to the side of Howell 's head but he takes it in his stride. Howell works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance. Howell walks into a left hand. Stevenson connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Howell showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Stevenson.
It looked like Howell wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. A big left from Howell misses.
That's one minute gone in the round. Stevenson changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Stevenson misses with a straight left. Howell is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches. Howell keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
A little feinted left hand from Howell on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Stevenson has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Stevenson moves away from the strike by Howell. Stevenson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Howell.
Stevenson ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. A big right from Stevenson misses. Howell paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button. Stevenson walks into a straight right hand from Howell. Stevenson throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Howell counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Stevenson throws a combination that misses and Howell cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Howell moves out of range as Stevenson strikes. A counter left hand to the body from Howell misses its target. Howell is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range. Howell changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Howell moves away from the strike by Stevenson. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Howell connects with a good right hand that stumbles Stevenson. Stevenson circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Howell uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Stevenson has time to react. A punch lands to the side of Howell 's head but he takes it in his stride. Howell is really peppering his opponent's head with punches.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Stevenson takes a body punch but keeps moving. Howell slips a jab and a cross from Stevenson.
Stevenson bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Howell takes a shot right to the bread basket. Howell throws a hook to the side of Stevenson's head but Stevenson sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. A combination from Stevenson does no damage. Howell is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all. Stevenson misses with a right hand and Howell counters with a straight right hand. Howell looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple. Howell uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Stevenson. Jon Stevenson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Howell scores with a decent looking hook. Howell misses the jab. Howell really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Stevenson closes the distance and lands a one-two. Stevenson jabbing away but nothing is landing. Howell ducks under a wild hook from Stevenson. Stevenson ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Howell moves away. Howell scores with a shot to the body.
Stevenson swings for the body but Howell moves out of range.
Howell throws out a powerful jab.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Howell takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Howell lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw. Howell thuds a left hand into Stevenson's body. Stevenson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Howell.
Stevenson throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Howell bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Howell throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Howell seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym. Stevenson works over Howell's head and body with a nice combination. Howell throws a wild hook but Stevenson just manages to duck under it and - ooooh! Howell gets nailed by a brutal uppercut which crumples him back against the cage! The referee jumps in - Stevenson raises his hands in celebration and walks away!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jon Stevenson! Josh Howell was interviewed post fight and said 'My opposition fought like a 10-year-old girl tonight. I'm not sure if I got knocked out or lost a terrible decision. My head hurts. '.
