5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Zubair Tukhugov! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Emerson Jorge and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gomez goes for a double leg but Tukhugov avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the ropes as Tukhugov continues to drive forward. Tukhugov closes the distance and pushes Gomez back into the ropes. Gomez pulls Tukhugov into guard.
Gomez looking to sweep here. No luck so far. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Tukhugov working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Gomez has a closed guard, preventing Tukhugov from standing up. Gomez lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Tukhugov wants to stand but Gomez is controlling the position.

Zubair Tukhugov is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Gomez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Tukhugov tries to close the distance and clinch up but Gomez swats him away and circles back towards the center. Tukhugov tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. Gomez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Gomez looking for a takedown here - he's got it. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Gomez pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Tukhugov is keeping the position for now. Gomez drops back, looking for a kneebar! Tukhugov looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Tukhugov looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Tukhugov! Gomez regains half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Tukhugov is thwarting Gomez's attempts to control the position. Tukhugov seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Gomez is doing well to control the position and prevent Tukhugov from advancing to side control. Tukhugov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gomez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Gomez trying to control from the bottom.

Tukhugov has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gomez is proving hard to escape from. Gomez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Tukhugov can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Gomez wants to stand but Tukhugov is controlling the position. Tukhugov would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Gomez wants to sweep here but Tukhugov controlling him for the moment. Tukhugov must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Gomez is trying to control the position but Tukhugov postures up. Tukhugov has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gomez is proving hard to escape from.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Tukhugov drives through and clinches with Gomez against the ropes.

It looks like Zubair Tukhugov has been cut. Gomez ducks under a wild hook from Tukhugov. Tukhugov is looking to clinch. Gomez throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Tukhugov wants to clinch. Gomez throws a big counter combination but Tukhugov scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage. Gomez fails with the takedown. Tukhugov throws a shot to the body.

That's one minute gone in the round. Gomez decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Tukhugov, up you get! Franco Gomez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Tukhugov doesn't manage to clinch there - Gomez circles away.
Tukhugov wants to clinch. As Tukhugov looks to move away, Gomez throws a big counter combo bu Tukhugov just gets out of the way. Gomez shoots in looking for a takedown. Tukhugov tries to sprawl out of it but Gomez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the ropes. Tukhugov manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Gomez shoots in but no luck this time. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Franco Gomez. That's going to take a lot out of him. Gomez looks to land a combination but Tukhugov avoids it well. Tukhugov tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Gomez counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Tukhugov defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Gomez. Tukhugov clinches with his opponent.

Tukhugov dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the ropes. Gomez decides to pull guard. Gomez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Tukhugov is one step ahead there. The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Gomez tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Tukhugov swivels and escapes. A decent looking cross lands there for Gomez. Gomez gets a double leg takedown into Tukhugov's guard. Gomez has gone for a leg lock! Tukhugov slips out almost immediately though and dives into Gomez's guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Tukhugov wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Gomez's closed guard. He's half up but Gomez has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Gomez pivots and extends the arm, Tukhugov falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Gomez! Well done that man!
