Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sheldon Cherry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Townsend!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Lou da Vinci and Steve Montenegro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Townsend tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Cherry swivels and escapes.
Cherry appears to be looking for a big counter.
Townsend shoots in and drives through. Cherry sprawls well.
The crowd cheers as Townsend lands an impressive looking overhand right. Cherry doesn't seem phased though.
Townsend goes for a double leg but Cherry avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Cherry continues to drive forward.
Sheldon Cherry has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Townsend.
Cherry on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Townsend. Townsend obviously looking to wear him down.
Townsend fails with an attempt to clinch.
Cherry tries to work over Townsend's front leg with a kick but Townsend checks it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Townsend takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.

Cherry half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Townsend dives in and grabs Cherry's left leg, looking for a takedown. Cherry pushes down on Townsend's head and hops out.
Cherry dodges the punch combination from Townsend.
Nice takedown defense from Townsend. No joy for Cherry on that attempt.
Cherry stuffs the takedown attempt from Townsend. Townsend gets slowly back to his feet.

As Townsend looks to move away, Cherry throws a big counter combo bu Townsend just gets out of the way.

Townsend tries to break free but Cherry pushes him back against the cage.
Townsend is trying to push Cherry away but Cherry has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Cherry tries to land knees in the clinch but Townsend avoids the damage to the body.
Cherry gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Townsend.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Townsend jumps guard but Cherry turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Cherry defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Townsend.
Sheldon Cherry is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Cherry will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Cherry avoids the head kick by Townsend.
Townsend fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Cherry shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Townsend but Townsend pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Cherry is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Townsend successfully pulls guard.
Townsend is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Cherry lands a couple of digs.

Townsend wants to sweep but no luck.
Townsend has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Cherry is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Townsend.
Townsend is breathing heavily.
Cherry working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Townsend tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Cherry presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Townsend is arching his back trying to strike from the bottom but Cherry turns him over and now has his back.
Cherry lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Cherry tightening his grip on Townsend, looking for the choke.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Townsend is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Townsend misses with a takedown attempt - Cherry sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Cherry attempts a counter takedown but Townsend avoids it well and moves away.
Townsend takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

and Cherry counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Cherry.

Cherry slips nicely into half guard, despite the strikes coming from Townsend.
Cherry is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Townsend can do to turn this around?
Townsend tries to kick Cherry off but Cherry keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Townsend moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Cherry postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Cherry with a nice head shot there.
Townsend wants to control but Cherry passes easily into half guard.

Cherry is working for a submission of some sort.
Cherry wants to work for an arm triangle but Townsend is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Townsend tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Cherry has advanced to mount. Uh oh.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Cherry with the ground and pound from mount.
Townsend reaches up to try and control the position but Cherry seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Townsend rolls and tries to escape and now Cherry has his back!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Townsend has hold of Cherry's leg, trying to break free but it's let Cherry lock up a rear naked choke! This could be big trouble! Townsend is turning an unusual color here… he's out! Cherry throws him to one side and jumps onto the cage to celebrate with his fans.
