Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ervin Gillespie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jean Pierre Vaillancourt! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, William Peck and Ian Loll.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gillespie fails with a takedown attempt. Vaillancourt closes the distance and clinches. Gillespie struggles to land a body shot inside as Vaillancourt controls his hands.
Gillespie tries to stall but Vaillancourt uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Vaillancourt working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely. Vaillancourt pulls Gillespie into guard.
Gillespie could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Gillespie sitting in guard, not really doing much. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Vaillancourt is trying to control the position from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gillespie showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Vaillancourt is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Vaillancourt is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Gillespie is controlling him. Gillespie trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Vaillancourt lands with a slapping head kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Vaillancourt drives through and clinches with Gillespie against the cage.
Vaillancourt blocks an elbow strike. Vaillancourt has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Gillespie regains guard immediately. Gillespie lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Gillespie controlling from the top position. Gillespie with a flurry of punches that miss. Gillespie might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Gillespie decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Vaillancourt, up you get! Vaillancourt lands with a kick to the temple. Gillespie shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
That's three minutes gone in the round. Vaillancourt tries to bum rush Gillespie with a series of wild strikes but Gillespie uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Gillespie changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. A slapping body kick lands there for Vaillancourt. Vaillancourt pushes Gillespie away with a front kick. Vaillancourt takes the fight into the clinch. Vaillancourt looking to stall.
Gillespie scores with a shoulder strike. Gillespie prevents Vaillancourt from breaking the clinch. Vaillancourt is trying to push Gillespie away but Gillespie has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Vaillancourt trying to stall but Gillespie improves his position.
Vaillancourt's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. A head kick by Vaillancourt misses and Gillespie counters with a two punch combo. Vaillancourt throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Gillespie gets tackled into the cage by Vaillancourt. Vaillancourt maintains the clinch.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! A short right from Vaillancourt on the inside. Vaillancourt gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head. Gillespie throws an elbow but it misses.
Gillespie has Vaillancourt pushed against the cage. Gillespie keeps control of Vaillancourt as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Vaillancourt avoiding damage as Gillespie throws knees to the body.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors. Gillespie tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Gillespie stalls. Vaillancourt tries to land knees in the clinch but Gillespie avoids the damage to the body. Gillespie controlling the action here for a moment.
Vaillancourt lands with a left to the head. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jean Pierre Vaillancourt dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Vaillancourt throws a body kick that misses. Gillespie half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. Vaillancourt closes the distance and pushes Gillespie back into the cage. Gillespie stalling in the clinch but Vaillancourt improves position. Vaillancourt putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Gillespie in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body. Gillespie tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Gillespie is looking to control Vaillancourt's arms but Vaillancourt gets an underhook and turns him. Now Gillespie has his back to the cage. Vaillancourt pulls guard effortlessly. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gillespie prevents Vaillancourt from getting back to his feet. Gillespie not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Vaillancourt has been the more effective fighter overall so far. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Vaillancourt is trying to keep Gillespie in close.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gillespie stands up and waves to Vaillancourt to follow him. Gillespie shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Gillespie fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Vaillancourt, pushing him back against the cage. Gillespie misses with an elbow over the top. Gillespie stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body. Vaillancourt stalling the fight.
Jean Pierre Vaillancourt seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far. Vaillancourt blocks an elbow strike. Gillespie digs a right hand underneath Vaillancourt's ribcage. Vaillancourt let out a lung full of air as it connected. Vaillancourt with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Vaillancourt has hold of one of Gillespie's legs. Gillespie is fighting the takedown attempt but Vaillancourt gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard. Vaillancourt distracts Gillespie with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gillespie is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Gillespie wants to sweep but no luck. Gillespie manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Vaillancourt manages to get himself to full guard.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Vaillancourt wants to stand up but Gillespie is controlling him.

Gillespie trying to control but Vaillancourt is working from the bottom. Gillespie stands up from guard. Let's bang! Gillespie moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Vaillancourt clinches with his opponent.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Vaillancourt has Gillespie pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Vaillancourt pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Gillespie tumbling to the mat - Vaillancourt dives into Gillespie's guard. Vaillancourt pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gillespie is keeping the position for now. Gillespie avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Vaillancourt with a flurry of punches that miss. Vaillancourt trying to control the position from guard on top but Gillespie is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Gillespie bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Vaillancourt's guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Vaillancourt being controlled here, momentarily. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jean Pierre Vaillancourt showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!
Gillespie takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Vaillancourt lands a head shot. Gillespie ducks right into an uppercut from Vaillancourt.
Gillespie is rocked! Vaillancourt throws a sloppy head kick and Gillespie decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Vaillancourt's guard. Oh Gillespie is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Gillespie wants to pass the guard but Vaillancourt is keeping the position. Vaillancourt is working an open guard so Gillespie takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Gillespie seems to have got his legs back now. Vaillancourt clinches up with Gillespie and pushes him back against the cage. The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Gillespie takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life. Vaillancourt throws an elbow that misses.
Vaillancourt gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Gillespie regains guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Vaillancourt accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Gillespie is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

That's one minute gone in the round. A head kick by Vaillancourt misses and Gillespie counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Gillespie. Vaillancourt takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Vaillancourt being controlled here, momentarily. Gillespie stands up from Vaillancourt's guard - Gillespie perhaps looking for a knockout. Vaillancourt lands with a hook. Gillespie tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Vaillancourt scores with a push kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gillespie ducks right into an uppercut from Vaillancourt. Vaillancourt rushes Gillespie and presses him up against the cage. Gillespie tries a knee to the head but Vaillancourt blocks it.
Gillespie jumps guard but Vaillancourt stands there with Gillespie around his waist. Gillespie gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Vaillancourt is trying to break the clinch but Gillespie is controlling him. A short uppercut from Vaillancourt. This has been an exciting period of action! Vaillancourt is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Vaillancourt avoids a wild elbow strike from Gillespie. Gillespie jumps guard and drags Vaillancourt to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Vaillancourt throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Vaillancourt advances to half guard. Gillespie is trying to get back to full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Vaillancourt is looking to take a break and control but Gillespie is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Vaillancourt landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Gillespie is defending against the submission attempts here by Vaillancourt.
Gillespie is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Vaillancourt's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Vaillancourt's back! Vaillancourt is trying to get back to his feet but Gillespie has full control of the position and if anything, Vaillancourt has just worked his way into a worse spot. Vaillancourt just trying to survive but Gillespie is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish. Gillespie slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gillespie has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Gillespie looking to soften up his opponent with punches.
Gillespie has good solid back control here. Gillespie working for a choke but Vaillancourt is defending well.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ervin Gillespie. I think Vaillancourt has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
