Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Diego Mendes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Brett Kewell! The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Bart Greer and Michael Johnstone.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendes shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kewell defends it nicely. Mendes throws a sloppy head kick and Kewell counters with a left to the body. Kewell lands a slapping body shot.
Mendes shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Mendes swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Kewell wants to counter with a clinch but Mendes pushes him away. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Mendes. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Diego Mendes. That's going to take a lot out of him. Kewell displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Mendes throws out the jab. Kewell moves away from the strike by Mendes. Mendes avoids the head kick by Kewell.
Kewell looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Mendes throws a head kick but Kewell moves out of range.
Nice sprawl there from Kewell as Mendes shoots in. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kewell gets in close and instigates a clinch. Kewell pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Kewell misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Mendes definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Kewell moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Mendes scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendes working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Kewell striking from the bottom but nothing landed.
Kewell is looking for a sweep. Mendes working the head and body with strikes. Mendes working the ground and pound. Mendes is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Kewell looks calm but he's in trouble here. Mendes gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Kewell is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Mendes lets go of the hold and Kewell can pop his arm back in it's socket.
