Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Edward McManis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Bates! The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Alan Glass and Stewart Dunkirk.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bates walks into a straight right hand from McManis. McManis misses with a leg kick and Bates counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. McManis pulls Bates in close to his closed guard and prevents Bates from doing any damage or advancing position. McManis wants to stand but Bates is controlling the position. Bates throwing strikes but missing. Bates stopping the sweep attempt from McManis. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. McManis pushes Bates off and scrambles back to his feet.
McManis jabs at Bates's body. Edward McManis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. McManis throws a nice looking combination but Bates bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

and Bates moves into the clinch. Bates looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. McManis turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and McManis manages to end up in side control. McManis is putting a hurting on Bates here, landing some big shots from side control. McManis throwing strikes but Bates manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control! McManis on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if McManis tries to get out of the position. Bates postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

That's two minutes gone in the round. McManis struggling a bit here. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! McManis tries to get back to half guard but can't. Bates lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. McManis is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Bates's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Bates thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed McManis's head. McManis controlling the position for now. Bates not landing any meaningful shots this time. McManis is trying to maintain the position but Bates is very close to passing his half guard.

McManis is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. McManis is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. McManis scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

That's four minutes gone in the round. No luck with that takedown attempt from McManis. McManis is breathing heavily. McManis gets tackled into the cage by Bates. Bates maintains the clinch. McManis breaks from the clinch.
Bates shoots in but no luck this time. McManis lands a jab to the head.
McManis fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Bates to the ground. McManis is now in Bates's guard. Bates working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from McManis. McManis postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Hammerfist, elbow! yells McManis's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. McManis pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Bates is keeping the position for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Edward McManis dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
McManis shoots in for a takedown but Bates shows good takedown defense. Bates wants to counter the offense by McManis and move into the clinch position. McManis scores with a jab to the body. McManis tries to clinch but Bates is having none of it. McManis looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. McManis moves into range and clinches up with Bates. Bates tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Bates ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Bates no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Bates is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Bates keeping moving, preventing McManis from controlling successfully. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. McManis stopping the sweep attempt from Bates. McManis throws a big elbow that misses.

Bates has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. McManis postures up in Bates's guard and throws a big left but Bates blocks it. McManis is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Bates can do to turn this around? McManis looking to sit in guard and control but Bates gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Bates loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Bates with a flurry of punches that miss. McManis pushes Bates off and scrambles back to his feet.
Bates has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. McManis misses with a jab, cross combination.
Bates steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from McManis. McManis misses with a leg kick. Bates tries to clinch up but McManis circles away and keeps his distance.
That's two minutes gone in the round. McManis shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Bates is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Bates has managed to clinch.
McManis is working for takedown but Bates is calmly controlling the position for now. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Edward McManis. That's going to take a lot out of him. McManis drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Bates successfully pulls guard.

After a battle for position, Bates asserts his dominance and retains side control. Bates in side control lands a decent elbow. McManis is not in a great position here, taking some shots. McManis is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Bates's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McManis kicks off Bates and gets to his feet.

Bates throws a counter combo. McManis looks to land a combination. Bates sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots. Bates takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
McManis shoots in but no luck this time. McManis works Bates's body with a nice hook. Bates fails with a takedown attempt. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! McManis tries to clinch up but Bates circles away and keeps his distance. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Edward McManis dominated that second round. That's time! McManis's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!
McManis shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Bates manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Bates bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in McManis's guard. Bates won't allow McManis to get back to his feet. Bates missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Bates prevents McManis from getting back to his feet. Bates trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Bates is fighting to break McManis's control of his arms but McManis is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Edward McManis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Both fighters are breathing heavily. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Bates throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. McManis scores to the head and body with a nice combination! McManis dives in and grabs Bates's left leg, looking for a takedown. Bates pushes down on McManis's head and hops out. Bates fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt McManis. McManis goes for a double leg but Bates avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Bates continues to drive forward. Bates tries to clinch but McManis moves out of range. McManis tries to close the distance and clinch up but Bates swats him away and circles back towards the center.
That's two minutes gone in the round. McManis shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Bates's guard. Bates utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Bates controls McManis momentarily but McManis frees himself. Bates wants to stand and escape but McManis is having none of it. McManis throws an elbow that misses. Bates uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in McManis's guard. Nice move by Bates! Bates connects with a couple of short punches. Bates won't allow McManis to sweep him here. Bates distracts McManis with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
That's three minutes gone in the round. McManis has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Bates has passed into side control.
McManis wants to control but Bates postures up. An elbow from Bates crashes against the mat.
McManis tries to bench press Bates off him but Bates keeps the position. McManis is pushing Bates's head away, looking to escape. Bates manages to hold on to the position though. McManis is looking for a sweep. You can see the frustration on McManis's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
That's four minutes gone in the round. McManis is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Bates off and has taken his back! Bates just trying to survive but McManis is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish. Bates is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but McManis is staying active. Edward McManis is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. McManis is landing with strikes. Bates can't take much more of this. Bates tries to break free.
McManis lands shots from the back. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. McManis misses with an elbow to the head.
And that's the end of the fight! Edward McManis showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for McManis, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
