Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
23 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sam Ponjev! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
16 - 11 - 0, fighting out of New York, Duncan Jon! The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Jeff Smith and Colin Fray.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ponjev avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Jon throws a hook to the side of Ponjev's head but Ponjev sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Ponjev jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
Jon misses with a lunging right hand
and Ponjev decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Jon's guard. Ponjev chips away with some ground and pound. Ponjev looking to pass the guard. Jon is looking to stand up but Ponjev isn't so interested in that idea. Ponjev trying to control but Jon is working from the bottom. Jon pushes Ponjev off and scrambles back to his feet.
Jon throws a lazy uppercut
and Ponjev counters with a nice uppercut. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Jon misses the jab. Ponjev tries to counter with a takedown but Jon is quick to defend against it. Jon misses with a straight left. A punch combination from Jon misses.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ponjev throws a nice looking combination but Jon bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ponjev. Jon looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Ponjev slips under a jab from Jon. Jon misses with a wild body shot. A jab from Jon finds it's way through Ponjev's defenses. Ponjev ducks under a wild hook from Jon. Ponjev seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym. Jon lands with a straight right. Ponjev didn't see that one coming. Ponjev misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Jon misses with an uppercut
and Ponjev counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Ponjev. Jon is trying to force a seperation but Ponjev has the dominant position. Ponjev prevents Jon from breaking the clinch. Ponjev lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Jon backwards. Jon stops a takedown attempt from Ponjev.

Jon is looking to break free of the clinch but Ponjev has double underhooks. Ponjev is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Ponjev is struggling to control the position. Ponjev looking for a takedown. Jon wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Jon throws a head punch that misses. Ponjev makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut. Ponjev prevents a body shot from Jon. Jon tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked. Jon is trying to break free.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Ponjev. The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Ponjev takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life. Ponjev seems to have come into the fight with the intention of avoiding any damage in the clinch, rather than actually showing any aggression. Jon tries to break free but Ponjev pushes him back against the cage. Ponjev lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards. Ponjev taking a breather. Ponjev turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Ponjev manages to end up in side control. Jon is trying to escape and get back to his feet. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ponjev lands a big elbow. This has been an exciting period of action! Jon is squirming around, avoiding Ponjev's attempts to control the action. Ponjev lands a big shot there that rocks Jon but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Jon wants to try and get back to his feet. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

and Ponjev counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Jon! Ponjev trying to control the action but Jon is working from the bottom. Ponjev is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Jon can do to turn this around? Ponjev working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Jon takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. Jon is trying to escape and get back to his feet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ponjev scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Jon to see if he's OK. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jon dodges the ground and pound from Ponjev. Ponjev scoring with punches from side control. Jon is not in a great position here, taking some shots. Jon is trying to get back to his feet. Ponjev is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Jon has escaped the position, nice work there.

He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. The strikes coming from Ponjev are missing the target in this wave of attacks. The ground and pound from Ponjev seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Ponjev scores with a couple of short elbows. Ponjev working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Jon wants to get back to his feet but Ponjev drags him back down.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sloppy strikes there by Ponjev. Ponjev looks up at the clock and then as Jon takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Ponjev smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Ponjev in side control lands a decent elbow. Jon pushes Ponjev away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Ponjev gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Jon really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ponjev. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Ponjev landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. A lull in the action here as Ponjev stalls from top position. Jon's jab looks to have found its range, popping Ponjev under the eye. Jon throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Ponjev sees it coming and avoids it easily. Jon thows a left - swing and a miss! Ponjev is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Jon. The fighters circling - Jon throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Ponjev wants to control but Jon is keeping him busy. Ponjev throws an elbow but Jon slips to the side and avoids it well. Ponjev works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Ponjev will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Jon is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Ponjev asserts his dominance and retains side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ponjev controls the position from side control. Ponjev lands a nice forearm strike. Jon is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. Ponjev is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Jon is trying to escape and Ponjev transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Jon is forced to tap! Nice work there by Ponjev! Very nice indeed!
