Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Norman Vizcarra! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chad Smith! The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Konstantin Menshow and Dmitry Maklakov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith shoots in but Vizcarra avoids the takedown attempt easily. Vizcarra loads up on a big right hand but Smith slips the punch. Vizcarra throws a jab but it's blocked by Smith. Norman Vizcarra seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Vizcarra misses with a shot to the body so Smith counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Vizcarra is breathing heavily. Smith landing with the ground and pound. Vizcarra knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smith on the ground. Smith drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Smith jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Smith works a leg free and moves into half guard. Smith decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet. Smith shoots for a double leg takedown but Vizcarra sprawls well. He's pushed Smith's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Smith misses with a takedown attempt - Vizcarra sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Vizcarra has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Norman Vizcarra has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chad Smith.
That's one minute gone in the round. Vizcarra throws a hook but Smith blocks it. Smith slips under a jab. Smith closes this distance looking for a takedown but Vizcarra circles away. Smith looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple. Vizcarra stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Smith. Smith misses with a low kick. Vizcarra throws a leg kick but Smith checks it. Smith moves away from the strike by Vizcarra. Vizcarra looks to land a body kick but Smith moved away. Vizcarra avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Smith tries to clinch there but Vizcarra circles away.
Vizcarra keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith throws out a loose jab but Vizcarra uses good head movement to avoid it. Smith misses with a looping right. Smith rushes Vizcarra and presses him up against the cage. Vizcarra has a couple of punches blocked by Smith.
Vizcarra tries to land a knee to the head but Smith blocks with his arms.
Smith is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Vizcarra to keep the fight standing. Nice elbow from Vizcarra. Vizcarra wants to stall.
Smith lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action! Smith passes to side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smith advances nicely into full mount. Vizcarra on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Vizcarra tries to get out of the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smith quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Smith but it's paid off an Vizcarra is forced to tap! Nice work by Smith.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:26 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Chad Smith! After the fight, Chad Smith was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
