PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Masaru Ikeda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Nove (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Masaru Ikeda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Frank Nove!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Shirou Masuda and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nove is looking to land body kicks.
Nove shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Ikeda tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Nove swivels and escapes.

Nove clinches.
Ikeda drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Nove gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Ikeda goes for a takedown attempt but Nove pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Masaru Ikeda. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Ikeda drives through with a takedown into Nove's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ikeda trying to control but Nove is working from the bottom.
Ikeda is fighting to break Nove's control of his arms but Nove is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Ikeda stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Nove swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Nove instigates a clinch.
Nove tries for a takedown but Ikeda manages to get underhooks.
Nove blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Nove turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Nove manages to end up in side control.
Sloppy strikes there by Nove.
Nove tries to advance to mount but Ikeda denies him.
You can see the frustration on Ikeda's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Nove sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Ikeda is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ikeda is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Ikeda is not content to let Nove control the position.
Nove moves into full mount!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nove sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Nove has control of Ikeda's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Ikeda regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Nove swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Ikeda is now in Nove's guard. A big mistake from Nove there, giving up the dominant position!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Nove is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Nove dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Ikeda throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
The fight stays on the outside here - Nove looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Ikeda misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Nove wants to counter with a clinch but Ikeda pushes him away.
Ikeda moves in looking to clinch but Nove pushes him off.
Ikeda shoots in for a double leg but Nove sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Nove looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Nove gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Nove decides to pull guard.
Ikeda won't allow Nove to sweep him here.
Nove throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Ikeda is working Nove over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Nove looking for a sweep. Not yet Nove, not yet.
Nove keeping moving, preventing Ikeda from controlling successfully.
Nove keeping full guard, as Ikeda tries to pass.
Nove is trying to control the position but Ikeda postures up.

Ikeda scoring with some ground and pound.
Nove is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Nove looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Nove tries to clinch there but Ikeda circles away.
Nove shoots and misses

and Ikeda holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Masaru Ikeda has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Frank Nove.
Ikeda is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Nove is keeping busy.
Nove is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Ikeda to keep the fight standing.

Ikeda tries for a takedown. No joy.
Nove fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Nove is pressed up against the cage. Ikeda has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Nove down to the mat. Nove avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Ikeda gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Nove is breathing heavily.

Ikeda has his foot on Nove's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Nove works his way back into a safe position though.
Nove is stalling in the full guard.
Let's hope that Nove has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Ikeda looking to control.
Ikeda utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Nove wants to stand but Ikeda has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Nove trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Ikeda tries to close the distance and clinch up but Nove swats him away and circles back towards the center.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Nove showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Nove dives in for a single leg takedown but Ikeda sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Ikeda shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Ikeda showed some decent athleticism there.
Nove is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Nove is looking to control Ikeda's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Nove avoid being mounted?

Ikeda is stalling here. Nove is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Ikeda seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Nove has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Ikeda is trying to get back to half guard.
Nove controls the position.
Ikeda is looking for a sweep.
Ikeda tries to escape but Nove is in control.

Nove decides to stand back up.
Nove pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Nove fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Ikeda sprawls well initially but Nove persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Nove performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Nove has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Nove cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Ikeda can't escape the position.
Ikeda is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Nove has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Ikeda's face.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A nice elbow there by Nove.

Nove is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Ikeda can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Ikeda slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Nove prevents Ikeda from improving his position.

Nove is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Ikeda has managed to free his arm - good work.

Ikeda regains full guard. Nicely done.
Masaru Ikeda has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Nove stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ikeda swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Nove drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Nove jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ikeda is trying to keep Nove in close.

And that's the end of the fight!
Frank Nove comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Nove winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
