Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Douglas Pondingham! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Marcio Martins! The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Aafke Stam and Daniel Blasius.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Martins defending well as Pondingham loads up on a big left hand. Martins has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight. Martins slips under a jab. Martins feints the counter takedown. Pondingham throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Martins drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Pondingham defends it well. The fighters circling - Pondingham throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Martins closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Pondingham quickly recovers to half guard. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Pondingham pushes Martins off looking to stand but Martins dives back in and keeps control.
Pondingham trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Martins is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Martins wants to control but Pondingham is keeping him busy.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pondingham wants to get back to his feet. Pondingham knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Martins on the ground. Martins is looking for a kimura here.
Martins stops Pondingham from getting back to his feet.
Martins seems to be working for a kimura but Pondingham defends the submission attempt. Pondingham is trying to stand up here but Martins is controlling him well. Martins looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Pondingham is trying to stand.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Pondingham misses with a looping right. Martins moves out of range as Pondingham strikes. Martins dodges the punch combination from Pondingham.
Pondingham connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
It looks like Marcio Martins has been cut. Nice defenses there by Martins. Pondingham cracks Martins with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. Pondingham misses with a body kick. Martins changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt. Pondingham connects with a good right hand that stumbles Martins. Martins circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Martins looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Pondingham is fending him off so far but Martins persists. Nope, Pondingham circles away and we're back to standing. Some wild striking there from Pondingham.
Martins unleashes a big counter combination but Pondingham bobs and weaves and avoids any damage. Pondingham misses with a straight left. Pondingham misses with a kick to the body.
Martins is looking to clinch but Pondingham is avoiding it.
Pondingham thows a left - swing and a miss! Pondingham moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Martins takes the fight into the clinch. Pondingham is trying to break the clinch but Martins is controlling him. Pondingham breaks the clinch.
Martins slips a straight right by Pondingham. Martins tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. The fighters circling - Pondingham throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Martins fails to land the takedown. Pondingham fires out a quick counter leg kick but Martins just manages to avoid it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pondingham looks to land a combination but Martins avoids it well. Pondingham throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Martins is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here. Douglas Pondingham seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Pondingham connects with a nice looking jab.
Pondingham throws a jab but it's blocked by Martins. Martins tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. Pondingham connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Martins moves out of range as Pondingham strikes. Pondingham missing with a left hand there. Martins was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Pondingham stuffs the takedown. Douglas Pondingham has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marcio Martins. Pondingham lands with a right that hurts Martins. Martins looks to clinch but Pondingham throws a short knee that drops Martins. This one is all over!
